Entering UK with CCJ

Hi, first time on the forum, hope I'm in the right place.

Hoping someone has some advice. I am living abroad and 11 years ago I had outstanding credit card payments. Believe it or not, I forgot all about it after I moved and recently remembered about it with horror. I've tried finding out who to speak to about paying it off but have had no luck. I tried doing a search for a CCJ and came up with nothing under my name, the problem is I can't remember the house number (only the street name) so I don't have my old full address. I went onto Google Maps and my old house and the one next door have been made one so I couldn't see what the house number was. I did a search on an address guess and the one next door and no CCJ was found.

I am now planning to visit UK in two weeks and am worried that I am going to be stopped at the airport. If a CCJ was taken out against me, can I be stopped at the airport and arrested?

I find it hard to believe that it would just be dropped. Does anyone know if one can check for a CCJ using just your passport number?

Any advice would be great.

    Hi,

Err.......no, last time i looked this was a free country, certainly not North Korea, you cannot be arrested for debt.

Anyway, if its been 11 years, all those debts will of disappeared off your credit file many moons ago, and will be statute barred by now.

And if any legal action was ever taken, its also likely the CCJ`s wont be showing either, even if they were its a private matter between you and your creditors, you will not be stopped at customs for that reason.

I would say they would of given up trying to collect these debts a very long time ago.

You can search the CCJ register here, however its not always a comprehensive list, and if you cant remember your address, then its pointless, but still :

Hi there and welcome to MSE,

I agree that there is no reason for you to have any issues at the airport for a CCJ debt, so I would try not to worry about that. And as far as finding information is concerned, realistically you are going to struggle now. The trust online search and your credit file will only show information from the last 6 years, so if the CCJ was taken out 11 years ago, it won't show anywhere.

To clarify something said above, once a creditor has obtained a CCJ the debt cannot be statute barred. The limitations act prevents the creditor taking court action, but they have already done this. What is applicable to old CCJ's is that if they are more than 6 years old and haven't been enforced during that time the creditor would need special permission from the court to use enforcement action such as bailiff etc. If this is only a flying visit this is also unlikely to be a problem for you at all.

If you do ever get any correspondence about this debt, then you can always get more advice at that point, but it does seem as though the debt is going to be quite hard for a creditor to chase at this point.

Thank you, thank you! You can imagine my relief. I appreciate your help very much. I will probably continue to investigate at a later stage. Thank you again.
