Paid less when I'm on annual leave

Hi.
I just wanted to know if there is a circumstance or reason for being paid less when you're on holiday, than when you're at work on the PAYE system.
I work 4 days a week; a contract agreed amount of 33hrs pwk, although the core company hrs are 35hrs pwk over 5 days, but the rest of the staff work 39hrs a week to make up a full weeks wage.
I had 2 days holiday in February and I found that I was some hrs short to my normal weekly pay. The boss said something about working overtime as I start 8-5pm and the original company hrs are 9-5pm.
I'm a bit confused why holiday pay ends up being paid less and I don't even work the full standard hrs of 35.
Can anyone explain the pay difference if possible?

    Ask HR and/or payroll - your boss might not know, whereas this is payroll's job! Anyone else, including on internet forums such as this, can only be guessing.

    Yes ask your payroll/HR department. I work in payroll and I can't give you an answer from the info you have provided.


    How many hours are they paying you for the 2 days holiday in February?

    Have they prorata the holiday allowance properly?

    Usual problem is they pay holiday as normal 1/5 of a week when you should get 1/4 of your week.

    It should be fairly obvious from the details.

    As per previous replies, ask the payroll department.


    But to take a wild guess - could it be that when you're working your normal day, you get paid an hour at time-and-a-half ? Whereas holiday would usually be paid based upon standard hours / rate.

    Yes it could be this, it could be that, it could be just a typo on inputting your holiday hours, there's no point guessing.


    Ask the relevant department, it'll be far easier.

    They can do this if they dont feel that you are working hard enough.

    If you do 40 hours per week but your employer thinks you are only giving 50%, then you are only entitled to 20 hours pay....

    Rubbish !


    If you're not performing to the expected standard then you might expect a talk from your boss, maybe even a verbal or written warning in extreme cases. But no company can arbitrarily deduct pay simply because they think you're not pulling your weight.

    Could it be that your daily rate is wrong on the payroll system. we get that sometimes with the 4 day workers. Their daily rate gets calc'd based on salary/260 working days, whereas it should be on salary/208 working days. In the average month you don't notice it because you just get 1/12th of salary, but if anything unusual happens (sick pay, holiday pay, leavers etc) that uses a daily calculation then it causes a problem.

    There is no payroll or HR, hence my thread. There's only 10-13 people that work there, so he prefers to do the wages himself. This is very common in a lot of small businesses, because all they need is an accountant. I understand that holiday is sometimes paid at the standard rate, which I am on, so he can't pay any lower.
    As for working 4 day/5 day, I'm not sure that applies to the PAYE system as we are paid by the hr. So on my payslip, it's clear to see how much I'm paid and the deductions. There is no working in arrears etc...as we are paid weekly every Friday. Nothing is carried over into the following week, so if you walk out on a Monday, you'd get 1 days pay on Friday.
    I was deducted 1 hr each day, for the 2 days I had off in February.
    I am concerned because I have a couple of days off in September and 2 weeks in October.
    I just wanted to be able to have some info on this pay pattern beforehand.
