Hi there,

I'm just looking for some advice.
I am really far behind with my council tax, they have taken out an enforcement order against me.
I contacted them last week asking that they wait until last Friday for the payment. I emailed them on the Monday, they replied on the Thursday, telling me they accepted. This was the day before it was due, so I wasn't able to get it as I was borrowing off a friend.

I assume that tomorrow they will pass the debt to their "collection agent". When will they come to my door?

I can now pay it on the 31st August, will they come before that?

You might need to contact them again, and this time make sure you have the money available when you say you will (so if you need to borrow from a friend, ask now so you have it when needed)

Are you in England, Scotland or Wales ?

If the council were minded to instruct the enforcement agent then the enforcement agent would have to give 7 days notice (minimum) before visiting but their involvement would incur an immediate £75 and then £235 if they came out with the intention to remove goods.

Only the council will know when they're going to send it to the enforcement agent but all you can do is ask them nicely if they'll hold it to the end of the month.

  • Thank you. So they couldn't just turn up? They'd have to send a letter first? I've written the council a letter asking them to wait for me.

    Thank you.

    Thank you.

The 7 day notice is a legal requirement before they can attend a property.
