DR Bike-fix query?

My chain keeps randomly switching gears and clunking up and down the gears without me changing them. Just as I ride, it clicks and seems fine then all of a sudden clunk clunk up n down the chain... Is the bike knackered ? Or if I take it to do,done do you think this problem can be fixed ? Maybe new chain? Or setting of the gears?
Any opinions welcome, as I'm no bike guru

    Checking the gear settings would be the first thing to do. Of course the chain, cassette, mechs, chain rings, cables or levers could be at fault but start with the simple things.

    Assuming the chain/gears are fairly clean and not gunked up...

    First try adjusting the derailleurs so that the chain lines up perfectly with the gears as you change up/down.

    You may need to replace the gear cables and housings (as they may be sticking).

    Or the chain/gears may be worn. If this has just started happening, a new chain might fix things. Otherwise, you'll have to replace the rear cassette of gears, and the front chain rings as well as the chain.

    Have a look on YouTube for "how to" videos -- there are plenty of step-by-step guides showing you how to check/fix things.

    Thank you,,we have a Dr Bike mechanic where I work, so I'll take it to him to see. I just wanted to know if it was fixable or if the bike is !!!!!!ed completely. I bought it for £50 and its developed this already. So don't know if it's worth returning, or if I can fix it, even through a mechanic, as the bike body etc is mint. I really like it, just worried about the chain n gears not adjusting. I know zero on bikes . Just like to ride them.

    its always 'fixeable' ;) Just a cost/effort issue.
    Bike gears are in reality very simple when you take a bit of time to learn.
    In short ensure the changers are aligned over the cogs,the cables dont have slack in them.
    Then its really down to wear n tear.
    The fact they work sometimes mean its more than likely just needing some adjustment and TLC.

    It depends a lot how much you're going to be charged for labour, but a cheap chain, cassette and set of gear cables are probably each £10 to £15 each.

    If the gears have been badly bent out of shape, you might need a replacement hanger -- also £10 to £15. (On a cheap bike, with cheap gears, you could easily just bend the hanger back into the right position, though.)

    Degreasing everything with a specialist degreaser (the Muc-Off brand do a great one), rinsing, drying, then relubricating will do your bike the world of good, and make it much more pleasant to ride. Better to replace the cassette and chain-rings too if they're worn.

    The bike repairer you're using *might* suggest just using a new chain, as it'll be cheaper and easier. But if the gear sprockets are worn, you may still have shifting problems and the new chain will wear out quickly.

    Dodgy gears always make a bike irritating to ride. Get them fixed, and it sounds like you'll have a fun reliable bike. :-)

    Oh, and bikes are actually really simple to fix/repair once you know how everything works (and have the right tools). It's worth getting your head round the basics, like adjusting the gears, and fixing a puncture, and keeping the drivetrain clean, just so you can instantly fix those little annoying issues that crop up.

    My best bike is around 10 years old. Bought for £150 off eBay. I use it daily. I don't want it stolen so make it look bad by using black & silver inappropriately. One black crank one silver. Black rim with silver spokes. Wheels pitlocked. I built my front wheel with a dynamo so covered the wiring with black tape. Looks bad but runs fab. I was asked to go on a sponsored bike ride recently. 40 miles off road. Family event. When I got there it was all lycra which I don't have and was unexpected. There were about 30 bikes there. All different but all brand new showroom condition. They were all talking as though they knew about bikes. I just couldn't get it. If I did the same ride in 10 years time I would have the same bike. Have bikes become a disposable item?

    That reminds me of a guy I saw pushing his bike with a flat. I stopped to help, and it was obvious that the gleaming spotless bike was brand new, probably on its first outing, and from the way he wouldn't let me anywhere near it that he was pretty precious about it. He just took my tools, and then demonstrated that he hadn't a clue how to mend a puncture.

    Unaware that you can't snap the tyre over the rim without pushing the bead off the bead seat first, he got it as far as he could manage and then started pumping the tyre "to push it the rest of the way onto the rim". He didn't know there was a hose in the pump handle either, so he was trying to screw the pump directly onto the valve.
