Looking to buy a printer that has cheap ink cartridges to replace.

This will depend on how many sheets you print each month, but have you looked at HP Instant Ink?

I run Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, and my Brother printer cost a fortune in ink. When the price increased from £59.99 to £91.99 in less than six months (and this was just the ink!), I replaced my printer with one from the HP Envy series. There are three options that I know about, but if you are a heavier user, it may be worth investigating whether there are more.

For fifty sheets a month, pay £1.99
For a hundred sheets, pay £3.49
For 300 sheets, pay £7.99 (I think - can't remember the exact details for this option)

Sheets can be in black or colour ink. Unused sheets can be carried over for one month. If you need extra, it is £1 for twenty sheets.

The printers often come with offers of free months. Mine came with nine months free - so my ink for this year, between three Guiding units, will cost less than £10.50. That's a massive difference from almost £120 last year. There were starter packs of ink with the printer, but new ones were sent out as soon as I registered (you have to register for Instant Ink within a specific time to get your free months - I think it was 28 days).

The cartridges are not replaced every month. Instead, they are larger cartridges that are replaced when needed. Everything is recorded via the internet. New cartridges are posted to you, and there is a recycling envelope for you to return old ones free of charge. The online account is very easy to use.

I decided to go onto Instant Ink after several guiders recommended it, and it really has worked out so much cheaper. I can happily print coloured items without worrying about the high cost, and I don't have to think about low levels of ink, getting more cartridges and finding them out of stock or increased in price, or anything else. When I start paying in January, all I have to remember is to claim back the £3.49 a month that I will be paying from my bank account by Direct Debit.

Thanks. I must admit we had this week a few years back when I had my other business. And forgot about it. Think we bought the printer and signed up to it in pc world.

It's mainly to print off invoices etc. And animal movement licenses etc.

1. Do a search on eBay for printer cartridges. Select "Buy it now" and "UK only". Sort by price.

2. Scan through the list looking for cartridges that are both plentiful and cheap.

3. Buy a printer that takes those cartridges.

Do you need colour printing? If not, a cheap mono laser printer might be a better option - just check that ebay sells cheap compatible cartridges for the one you choose. I've got a Samsung M2070W scanner/printer/copier and a replacement cartridge costs about £12 including p&p and lasts for months.

If you mean shelf life, upwards of a year or more.

if you mean in use, it obviously depends how much you print. Mine last four or five months and I print about 500 sheets a month.

2 years worth of INK plus £100 cashback you can get the lower models for less but with the £100 cashback it makes this probably the best value printer on the market. typical ink cartridges only have about 5mls of ink in these little bottles come with 70 mls and the set costs similar price to a set of cartridges. So 14 x amount of ink for the same price as 1 set of cartridges.

We have a Canon MG5350, and the ink is very cheap and the printer works well using very cheap ink from ebay and Amazon.

However, we bought this printer quite a few years ago, and it may be difficult to buy one now.

I don't know how much money we've saved with this printer, but it is a LOT.

The MG5750 is a similar looking current printer. The ink is more expensive. Typical prices are £20.something for 10 cartridges. As I haven't used this printer, I can't directly recommend it. But, it seems to be the most similar thing to what we have. The MG5350 was more expensive than other similar looking printers, but we were recommended it by a printer ink shop. It was a very wise financial decision to buy that printer compared to cheaper printers in the same range which required more expensive ink.

I would get a laser jet, I got one a few years back purely because when we come to use it its always ready to go. I'd got sick of printing using the inkjet printers and invariably the print heads would be blocked and unusable. A full set of cartridges for our laser jet printer cost just over £10, think the printer was about £100 though
