Performance and salary review

I've just had a performance review at a company I have been with for 4 and a half years.
It was very successful in that I have glistening reviews from my boss and clients alike and I am very well respected so my boss has said he would like me to manage my department.
All good, I'm happy too.
However, when it came to salary I clammed up and said I'd have to research and get back to him on my expectations. I am soon to be a dad for the first time and my boss has said he would like to help support me with that in my salary increase. Can anyone help with what I should try to be aiming for in terms of amount of increase?
This is the only part of my career progress that holds me back, when I'm asked about salary.
How much do you think is an achievable amount of increase?

Personally you were right not to make a figure up there and then but otherwise considering you have not told us anything about the work you do, the wage you're on etc no one can advise.shearer9206 wrote: »I've just had a performance review at a company I have been with for 4 and a half years.

Go research what jobs are available out there that are similar to what you do now and see where you rank in terms of this pay scale....if you're lower than average then I'd point this out and ask to be moved on to average as a minimum, if you're above average then ask for an increase but don't mention average, mention what the top earners get.
