You probably don't need this word of warning - but you would be taking a risk if you used 1st or 2nd class mail for vouchers with a cash value. To have the contents covered, you should use Special Delivery which costs £4.30 for £500-worth of cover.
I hadn't actually thought of that - thanks for the reminder. Definitely worth bearing in mind.

  • Can I just say I think this is a wonderful thing you are doing - really admirable and I only wish I could do something similar for my parents who are currently struggling due to my father being made redundant at 60. I do what I can for them e.g. lifts to the supermarket, the occassional meal out and a few bits of groceries but as I'm stupidly in debt, thats all I can manage.

Well done - its lovely to hear of some compassion for a change. I hope things improve for him soon xx
Its nice to be important but more important to be nice!

  • A hard situation especially when you live so far from your family member.

I second the online supermarket shop - you can buy literally anything from Tescos nowadays and a semi regular online shop would be a good idea.

Vouchers sent in the post is a good one, just make sure that you send them by recorded delivery.

Recorded delivery is really just that - for the 70p fee it charges Royal Mail collects a signature on delivery. The only compensation payable is up to £34 and there is no compensation for cash or jewellery. Vouchers are "cash" as far as this is concerned, I'm afraid. That's why the more expensive service of Special Delivery is recommended.

Further thought - postal orders can be cashed at a Post Office and can be made out to an individual's name (and perhaps for payment at a specific PO.) The fee (for postal orders over £10) is 8.75% so is a fraction about the recorded delivery fee but could be more economic than special delivery for, say, £30.

I think giving him a cheque leaves a trace because he has to bank it. Giving a small amount of cash every week would be better.
