Yes, the trick for me is move the money away from my current account. This month I've managed to save over £100 by moving bits and bobs to a savings account pretty much daily. But we've done a budget and know most of our usual expenses. And you need to be realistic, it's better to divide your spare money in savings and spending, so your savings might not go up as quickly but you're less likely to binge spend than if you put all spare money into savings.
We also do a standing order of £15 a week to cover car costs (mot etc) and that has made things so much easier. We always used to struggle to pay the annual bills, but now we have it cover in our savings, and psychologically we find it easier to do it weekly than monthly. In my mind I'm thinking wow, £65 a month, no way can we do that! But £15 a week, yeah, no problem. DH gets paid monthly so you'd think we would do a transfer at the beginning of the month, but we find it easier to do a weekly transfer.0 -
Make a written budget and stick to it. Somehow its more real in writing! Allocate spending money each week and put it in plastic wallets - 1 for each week. Also learn to say no! If you have a night out don't go over budget. Don't buy rounds etc. Only take a set amount with you and don't use cards. People might comment to start with, but once you are debt free and have spare money then they will wish they had done the same. Also get an emergency fund in place. That way when something crops up you won't have to borrow. I think you can do it because you have a goal in sight. There are consequences if you mess up which will help you stay on track.0
