Mortgage shortfall Ge money

Hi
I've never posted to a forum before so excuse me for any mistakes. I took a joint mortgage with my ex 10 years ago through Ge money. He ran off and refused to help me with the house so I tried to rent it out for a number of years but the last tenant trashed it beyond affordable repair. I decided to go with the voluntary repossession and was in contact with Ge every step of the way. My house was sold at auction with a mortgage shortfall of 42k 18 months ago. They said they would contact me to pay but if my ex refused they would still go to me for the entire amount. I haven't heard anything but decided bankruptcy would be the best option as I can't pay and this needed to be dealt with. I checked my credit files and it shows as First National mortgage which was settled and balance made £0 a year ago. I called Ge who said when they pulled out of the UK market they passed the debt to a company called Merligen and gave me a phone number. This number is for Merligen Acquisitions who are not FCA regulated and they stated that they do not have the debt. I then tried Merligen investments who stated they don't have it either. They also denied any connection to Merligen Acquisitions even though on companies house they own Acquisitions and have the same directors. GE won't help me with this, the financial ombudsman won't touch my case As Acquisition is not regulated and both companies are insisting they don't have the debt. I presume the bankruptcy would then be invalid as due to my credit file I don't have the 42k debt. I want to move on with my life and don't want to have the worry of this following me for the next 11 years.i have everything documented in emails from all companies Can anyone give me any advice where I go next with this as I've hit brick walls in every direction now. Thank you
