Free (or cheap) Asbestos disposal in Northern Ireland?

I've been hearing from friends and family that homeowners can dispose of asbestos for free if you take it to somewhere in Belfast, but nobody is able to tell me exactly where?

Can anyone tell me where this place is and if you can use it if you don't live in Belfast?

Belfast city council collect it provided you live in the catchment . You can't take it to the amenity sites.

Also it's only cement based asbestos.
  • Wonder if I can drop it off at a friends house in Belfast :D

Is it true that not that many houses in Northern Ireland have asbestos compared to England?

Is it not where you begin to move it that it becomes dangerous ?

yes, its when you start creating "asbestos dust" that's where the problems occur
  • It's a concrete flue over a boiler (that's being removed) the contractor will remove and bag the flue in appropriate asbestos bag container but it's up to me to probably dispose of it.

It's not as expensive as you may think ... we just had 50m of tiles stripped, bagged & disposed of for £500
Try Eastwoods for a quote & at least you know it'll be done right
It's scary how much asbestos is about & where exactly it is

I know from bitter experience that once you involve a contractor Belfast City Council will refuse to assist you in disposing of the asbestos.
The asbestos service is apparently only for people who accidentally removed asbestos themselves and don't know what to do with it.
I would recommend contacting Eastwood who can handle it as strictly speaking you should not even be driving about in a car with the asbestos is your boot without a permit.

A few years ago we had asbestos guttering removed and replaced, the company carrying out the work bagged it and left it in the garden. At that point we were Castlereagh Borough council so I (carefully) put it in the car and took it to my brother-in-law's house from where Belfast City Council removed it.

I guess Belfast City Council do not want to subsidise the disposal costs from contractors which I think is appropriate.

Eastwood advised me that if you have removed the asbestos yourself (from your own property and without a contractor) you can legally transport it without a permit to the transfer station or disposal facility and they will accept for disposal upon paying the necessary disposal fees and providing it is double wrapped to their specification.

There seems to be only 2 facilities for disposing of asbestos in NI - Eastwood and McQuillan.

Unfortunately it seems that only Belfast City Council offer the facility of free (but limited to small amounts) of asbestos disposal. Other NI residents need to either transport the asbestos to one of the facilities above and pay the necessary fee's or employ the services of a contractor to remove and dispose.
