Money Moral Dilemma: Should I refund the postage fee?

  • An absolute YES - I do not think this question should even require an answer!

If you're that worried, take photo of you putting the item through their letterbox.

And what happens if it is too big to go through the letterbox and there is no one in to open the door?
  • They persist with this nonsense because some people, such as me, who don't read the forum apart from this, enjoy the Money Moral Dilemmas. It's the part of the newsletter I enjoy best, and I always click through on the link after reading the newsletter.

They have answered why they pose a question they won't respond to - They are intended to be enjoyed as a point of debate and discussed at face value. It's irrelevant whether the answers are late or the problem is made up, it's just a debate for readers to enjoy.

The only pointless exercise for me is having to read through the inevitable whinges from regulars who wage a never ending war against the existence of the Money Moral Dilemma concept.
Some of us enjoy it. Give it a break. If you don't like it, move on to something else and leave the rest of us to enjoy it. There is no need for you to comment.

    I agree entirely, well said!

Depends if you pass their house on the way to the Post Office. :) Ebay is a poor example to use for this- because of seller protection & "not received " items as mentioned above. If it's a parcel - £2.80 postage or over- I'd contact them regarding delivery options, but then you've got the hassle of refund & cash on collection.

I think posing this question is very wrong and for a money saving website it could end up losing someone a lot of money.

If someone buys something from you on Ebay and uses PayPal, if they claim non delivery then you need to have tracking that can be checked on-line to prove delivery. Otherwise Ebay/PayPal will refund the buyer from your PayPal account. You could get the buyer to sign a piece of paper and send this to Ebay and they will send refuse to accept this as proof of delivery. You could take a photo of the buyer holding that days paper in one hand and the item in the other and Ebay will still refuse to accept it as proof of delivery. Only online tracking counts.

So I would still post the item. I also offer free delivery on all my items as it stops all the "You charge me £3 for postage but the stamp only cost £2.98" arguments.

Really though I think this question is very irresponsible and if you sell an item on Ebay and have it paid by PayPal then unless you are willing to lose all the money if you are scammed, I would never hand deliver.

The only way I would do this if the buyer would pay me cash when I delivered it. You could always do them a deal for saving PayPal fees and postage cost.
  • Post it anyway - for all the (good) reasons given above!

    Difficult question.
You take the item and the cash and deliver it.
This will be appreciated and boost your ratings.
However the person could say they did not receive the item.

Unless he specifically asked for Royal Mail delivery ,deliver by hand.
Anyway you cannot deliver by hand as he has paid postage therefore you would be stealing from him.
    Fraud.
That will go down well with eBay!!
Perhaps posting may be a better idea thus you are covering yourself and not stealing postage.

And what happens if it is too big to go through the letterbox and there is no one in to open the door?

I only ever did it with a DVD, so I wouldn't have cared if I'd lost money on it because the whole sale was only worth a few quid. As it happens, I was able to deliver the item FAR faster than the Post Office and consequently got great feedback about speed of delivery.

I would post it. Anything with postage above the cost of a stamp gets sent by a trackable method when I post something won on eBay, if people aren't prepared to pay for the postage they won't buy it, and it means I have proof it was delivered if/when the buyer claims it wasn't - which they sometimes do. They don't know you live round the corner so it makes no difference to them if you're down the road or 100 miles away. For seller protection, you should post it.

No it doesn't, it's only considered trackable by eBay if you use 'Signed For'. You can't prove delivery with any of the standard methods of postage, even though you now get a 'tracking code' with everything sized small parcel and above sent over the counter.

Small parcels now provide delivery confirmation after delivery. Well if you buy on-line anway. Large Letters provide a code but if you click on it then Royal Mail just tell you that it was sent by a service which doesn't provide delivery confirmation.
