I insisted that we unzipped both bags and used them as quilts, one under, one over. He understood, as I rarely have my legs under the quilt as it is.

Just wish he could remember where he put them after last time. At this rate, he's going to be sent off down the camping shop to get whatever is on sale (we only take what we can carry, no car involved, so quilts are out of the question for us).

Yes - apologies - yours is much more wild camping - mine was too much cub camping (as leaders not as cubs - lol)

Mind you, it's a lots less scary than an old schoolfriend's 'camping' holiday.

Five bedroom tent with a footprint larger than my house. So they had 'a sitting room' and a 'games room for the Boys'.

Inflatable superking bed. Two inflatable double beds for the kids.

Inflatable armchairs. Six of them. For 2 adults and 2 children.

Wood table with folding wooden chairs.

A gas fired barbecue roughly the size (and weight) of an Aga.

A portable fridge. A portable freezer.

A trailer big enough to stick a car on top.

And a rental car to be able to pull it, complete with steps so she didn't have to climb into the heated seats. And iPads for the two kids, a brand new cricket set, scooters, footballs, a paddling pool, a goosefeather quilt and pillows, new clothes (none of which were suitable for outside wear), her hair and nails done specially, three fresh chickens, a bag of potatoes, carrots, peas, broccoli, yorkshire pudding ingredients and a leg of lamb and side of pork to roast for Sunday dinner. And all the pots, pans and cooking implements necessary for making a roast dinner from scratch.

They lasted two nights. The second only because it took her husband five hours to put the stuff up by himself and refused to do it again the following morning because it was a bit drizzly. She spent the entire time sat in the car moaning about how awful it was and she wanted to go home because it was too far away, it was impossible to cook properly with only space for five saucepans on the barbecue and somebody walked mud into the 'spare rooms' in the tent, plus her teenager refused to come out and stayed inside playing games on the iPad until the battery ran out.

They were staying in a fully provisioned site with the cleanest showers and loos in the known universe. Nine miles from home.


Some people shouldn't be allowed to attempt camping.

I hope they do wet wipes without perfume stuff in them (loathe perfumy smells and allergic to some).

I guess in the end there is wild and wild and perhaps mild camping. I shall go easy to begin with and with as little outlay as possible. Think I have a tent I can borrow from a friend, waiting to hear what it is like before deciding.

Look in the baby section - cheap and without harsh perfume.

Try freecycle, facebook etc for free/cheap camping gear especially after the festival season.

Don`t forget wellies, waterproofs and a camera for all those wonderful views.

Boots - look for the ones in light blue packaging. A week or so ago they were a pound a pop.

Think about heading for the Western Isles - Loads of wonderful places where you are welcome for wild camping, some with basic facilities too Just keep a reasonable distance from residential areas.







This is why I don't like great big tunnel tents - It wasn't even a particularly windy night by Western Isles standards:



I think those lumps in the first tent are the still sleeping campers!

Back in the late 1980s I used to do a lot of wild camping in Scotland. I had an Austin Maxi at the time which was the ideal car as all the seats folded flat to make a very comfortable double bed. To cope with the unpredictable weather, and give somewhere sheltered to cook and change, I made an awning that was held up by the open tailgate.

If you go to a cycle forum, or read cycle travel blogs, you'll find out a lot about wild camping.

The laws and views about wild camping differ dramatically between different countries. Apparently Holland can be quite strict, with campers being moved on by police. On the other extreme wild camping in Iran is pretty much formalised, with parts of parks in urban areas being either formally or informally set aside for camping, and people just turning up and camping there. One cyclist reported being given a police escort to move to one such place, with him reporting that he didn't feel that he was being 'moved on', but that the police were doing this for his benefit.
