A few have been brave enough to keep pushing until it gets escalated to me - but most just accept the first answer.
My job now includes HR, so I will be involved at some point!

It is not escalated to you, you are not his senior.

You've got all worked up over something that is not your concern. Take a step back and get on with your own job.

(I would also suggest you look for a new job, because you are making yourself unhappy in the current situation.)

Boris - it does get 'escalated' to me, as I am the only person able to resolve the issues. They are advised that their pay is definitely correct, then when some do insist that something is wrong, I am asked to check it and put it right.
  • Who asks you?

If it's your boss then they are aware that errors are being made and, presumably, have chosen to live with that fact.

If it's the employee then you need to say that you are no longer responsible for payroll and then need to pass back the query to the accountant responsible.

I'm getting the vibe that there's something going on in the background here other than mistakes being made
  • No-one 'asks', as such. This was the latest scenario.....
Staff member came into the office, it's open plan with four desks, they addressed my colleague and said that they were still not satisfied with their wages. The answer was that they had double checked and that their pay was definitely correct. The staff member continued to argue their point and my colleague continued to insist that there was no error. Eventually the staff member turned to me, handed me their wage slip and asked me to look at it. I immediately saw the error and they were several hundred pounds short on their wages. I told my colleague what the error was and asked them to correct it. This was all with our boss present. The error was corrected and nothing was said.
My boss likes to ignore things and hope they go away. They do not like confrontation or conflict.
There are lots of other 'silly' mistakes, but I am aware that I am more sensitive than most when it comes to attention to detail, so I ignore them.

I suppose the 'background' is that they are noisy and distractive. I am the person facing them, my boss and our other colleague sit facing each other, angled away from them! They sing, tap their desk, play 'air cricket' and 'air darts'. I have moved my PC screen so that I am out of eye-line and installed a desk screen to help with the noise. This is my personal issue to deal with, the errors on the wages are my biggest concern.
  • Is this a public sector job or some charity or grant funded type organisation?

    Not for profit organisation.
  • I thought so.

Just get on with your job and forget about what anyone else is doing. Whether the job is done properly or not doesn't really matter in that kind of industry. As you said yourself this person made so many mistakes with the payroll and nobody even noticed, they would have saved the company money if you hadn't jumped in.

    Forget about it.
