Starting new job during holidays in my notice period

I've been offered a job and they want to to start ASAP. I've accrued several weeks of holiday and have already allocated some of that during what would be my notice period.
My question is can I start the new job during my holidays if it's within my notice period? Perhaps freelance and then sign the contract after my notice period ends?

Strictly speaking no, unless your current employer agrees.
However you will have to decide whether to ask and risk them saying no, or just doing it and hope they don't find out!0 -
looks like it would be like having a 2nd job so depends on company policy.
As long as you can fulfill your obligation to your current employer (which given the circumstance is nothing) then i dont see what the problem is and i dont see how they would find out anyway.
only way i can see an issue is if bridges have been burnt and they want to be a pain. It wont be illegal either way.0 -
Not sure about the legalities but you'll get hammered for tax.0

On what basis do you think the op will be "hammered" for tax?0

Two wages - no allowances and might take them into higher tax bracket0

There are no rules against multiple jobs but there are multiple issue here.
The key one being that your new employer needs to be OK with this.
Especially if you will be working for them while contracted to the old place, different hours days are fine.
two scenario,
They know and just agree/don't say anything.
They don't know and find out.... will you still have a job.
One issue here is if the new place is happy to break this rule what else might they be happy to do..
There is not a lot the old place can do, I would not do this unless the holiday was at the end of the notice effectively you have finished.
You could offer to terminate early and have the holiday paid which would get rid of the problem completely.

Ignore the tax scare, it is simple you earn more money you pay more tax.
Two jobs or one job the tax is the same.
There is an advantage of two jobs in that you can* pay less NI so overall much of the time you actual pay less total tax rather than being "hammered"
*"can" as it depends on the exact numbers, NI starts at 0% jumps to 12% then drops to 2% per job.0 -

If only part of your notice period is covered by leave which has already been agreed, how do you plan to cover the rest of the period when your current employer presumably will expect you to be at work? Your current employer may not allow you to book additional leave during your notice period. That will be a particular issue is there needs to be a hand over period to current staff so that they can cover your job until a replacement is found.0
