Internal job

When a job is advertised internally and externally, do the hiring manager prefer internal as they have the knowledge of the business (and/as well as the experience for the job they are applying for)? If a person interally don't have a lot experience in the job they apply for, and the external one has more experience, would you/do they give the internal person a chance/the job? If you are a hiring manager what is your opinion on this?

Is it bad not to tell your your current line manager that you are applying for another job internally?

Typically hire someone who would fit the role - that could mean fit in well with the team, best qualifications, lowest salary ask, etc (technically it's a combination of the above)

In my work all are treated equally, there are boxes to tick as to the strengths etc. It advises on our work web pages that we tell our line managers, and always complete CV's fully as the interviewers do not have your records in front of them.

Indeed, the interviewing manager wont have the info unless its in your application.

In my experience it depends entirely on the position and who has applied for it. In my team, some vacancies were filled by colleagues from other departments and others were new starters.

You could ask the line manager responsible for the vacancy for an informal chat and ask what the role might involve - this wouldn't commit you to anything and you'd find out if it was something you wanted to go for. You don't have to tell your current line manager, although I would if the application had definitely gone in and s(he) is going to be approached for a reference.

Sorry this isn't much help, but good luck and best wishes to you nevertheless.

    Don't be naive.....

In my experience the line manazger has to endorse an application for an internal role, after all if you can't do your current job why let you loose elsewhere?
