Winter cycling clothing suggestions

  • Just a note on the waterproof jacket - make sure it's breathable.

When I first started cycling, I bought a North face cycling jacket in a sale, did the job in the rain, but it didn't breath so I ended up rather damp anyway.

Bought an insanely expensive jacket last year in a sale (7mesh resistance jacket), it's labelled as 'windproof' but is extremely water resistant.
Every North Face jacket on Ebay is a fake. There were two sellers on my local boot stall selling them too. They are all over the place, and they will be useless.I d only trust them from proper walking shops at full price, overpriced for what they are compared to Berghaus, Rab, Mountain Equipment and they have the cheek to daub their advertising logo on the rear of the jacket as well as the front so people can see you are bragging you can afford them

    Never mentioned ebay..

I bought the first generation "muddy tracks" jacket from the shop in Edinburgh, iirc it was 60% off at the time (turns out, the jacket was poorly received by cyclists and the company was selling the stock off, little known to me at the time)
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!
  • the jackets don`t appear to even have a pocket..useless ! .

Generally for me I wear jackets to keep the warmth in and rain out. I could be corrected, but I dont think the absence of a pocket will render the jacket useless for the above tasks.

20 miles a day to work and back for the last 4 years summer-winter.

Legging in the winter with pair shorts over the top from cheapie sports shop.

Thermal top under a t shirt and a cheapie water proof. Sometimes a fleece..........in the really cold weather. maybe 0 and minus. ;-]

Pair of gloves from cheapie sports chain and some thing for around the neck...........couple of pound on Ebay.
  • Good point about keeping your neck warm, although I tend to use neck warmers for skiing and avoid cycle trips to the shops when it's _that_ cold! Aldi have a merino one as part of their cycling special which starts today.

It's a shame we can't wear them for footie, but I might get one to wear whilst I'm waiting as sub and getting miserably wet and cold..

Rather specific but I cannot cycle in the winter unless my ears are covered. I must be related to Prince Charles and I suffer from excruciating pain if they freeze. Sure there is a trade off between a small deficit in hearing loss when they are covered but you learn to use your eyes and turn your head more.
