Toys R US - 3 for 2's Warning....

I am not sure if this has been posted already but Toys R US do have some great 3 for 2's on and yesterday I done a spot of Xmas shopping as I had been send a £5 birthday voucher for DD.

However, a word of warning, especially if buying a lot of items to put them through - and pay for them - seperately. It sounds like hassle but it is far quicker than having to go back and get a refund and have them all go through the till again seperatley.

Yesterday I bought 6 Polly Pocket sets on 3 for 2 and I gave them into the till this way: £2.99 x 3, 19.99 x 1 and 14.99 x 2 - now it should have given me a discount of £2.99 and £14.99 but it gave me just £2.99 and £2.99 so be warned. They are well aware of this problem and told me so and didn't even hesitate in running it through and voiding the 1st transaction - she even told me they are better going through in seperate transactions to get the benefit of the deals - but beware when getting your Xmas shopping that this is a problem for the buyer (not for TRU as they get more money!!). It will deduct the cheapest items only from your bill and I was overcharged by £12 - with a system they are well aware of and they are clearly not making an effort to improve this so people doing their bulk shopping are not going to be aware and are going to run them through, pay for them and not realise.

I think this is a tad snidey to be honest as you are then not getting the discounts you think you are when buying a combination of cheaper and higher priced items on 3 for 2. I would have thought it would put 2 through and then deduct the 3rd item they put through but it clearly down not work this way. Just check your receipts and beware of this problem.

This is a generic issue that you need to watch out for on all "3 for 2" or "buy 1 get 1 free" type offers, rather than a specific ToysRus one.

I had the same thing happen to me recently at B&Q with door handles (bought 4 each of 2 different types on bogof, and bill came to approx 3/4 the full price rather than half of it)....gave up trying to explain it to the customer services staff, so just went and got a refund on them all then went through the tills with the stuff in two batches.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

this happens everywhere doesnt it???? When ever I buy 3 for 2s in boots if I have to buy 2 lots I make sure I go through the till twice arranging the items so that I get the biggest discount. It will always say that you get the cheapest item free on any 3 for 2 not the 3rd and the 6th item you put through the till.

M & S is the only shop I know of where the tills are set up to give you the maximum discount - at least I think it does!

To be honest, I rarely g into town these days and everything I do is online. Because of the problems I have had with the kids getting out to the shops is not something I have been able to do. I tried to get the PP bits online and it kept on reducing them the first way, but then I thought if I went into the store I would at least be able to arrange them so the cheapest went through last but no. It doesn't make sense does it - buy 2 get 3rd free - they should make a specific note that it is the overall cheapest items that you get free. I guess I usually only buy 3 and not 6 but they had some of the smaller dolls on the same offer at £2.99 so I thought this would be a great little stocking filler to add to the collection. They never make it easier.

Oh and they also had the small My Little Ponies on 3 for 2 and as I got her that big MLP set that was on the deal of the day in Tesco in May (LOL, so long ago I can't even remember what it was) I have bought 3 of those as stocking fillers to give her some extra ponies to play with on the set as well. Nice!!

One present left to get and the Xmas shopping is all but finished!! Mind you, we still end up wrapping them on xmas eve and getting to bed at 2am so we feel like carp when the kids get up at 5am. How does that happen!!!!!!!!!!????????

Do you know if Woolies are doing 3 for 2 this Christmas? There are no indicators as in previous years and no mention in the new catalogue that was out yesterday and I will have less to spend if they don't do it this year!

Totally understand the xmas eve late night!

xmas eve is my dads birthday so when we were kids we used to be allowed to get up after midnight on xmas, open our toys and then we all went to bed :D and slept till the morning..

We dont do that with my two (yet!) but i can see it getting more tempting as every year we are also up later with wrapping things up.

    eeeh not long now :D

Sorry, it was 3for2 on halloween costumes that i got in about july time so i'm not sure about xmas but if they were i presume it would be in the catalogue.

Is there a money off voucher in the catalogue this year?
  • Lab dab, it was only the Big Red Book that I saw being put out in store yesterday, not the Christmas gift guide so there is still hope! I think the gift guide comes out around half term as does the Boots one. I usually see stock starting to come into Woolies with the green sticker on that shows it in the 3 for 2 promotion but not spotted any yet or any mention anywhere. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Boots tills are set up for maximum discount so sorry but Toys R Us seem to be one of the only big retailers conning their customers.
