Flat doesn't come with cooker?

Long story short (TLDR): No cooker, letting agent "missed" that info out. Want the flat still, its perfect. How could I go about asking the agent/landlord if they could put one in? As I can't afford the expenditure, and probably won't ever use the cooker when I leave!

There is a flat I put a deposit down on, after viewing and asking all the questions you should ask (fees, white goods, neighbours, landlord etc). The flat is just so perfect, I've been looking for weeks, and this turns up - a little further away from where I'd like, but a great flat with transport links, awesome finish, perfect size. Almost perfect.

The flat comes with no white goods, but until I went down to hand in my final papers, they told me the oven/cooker I saw there wasn't included in the property. There is a chance it could stay, but unlikely. The previous tenant doesn't want it, as every other bloody flat has one probably! But as I understand it, the tenant wants more than the landlord things is a good price (classic landlord !!!!).

I've consulted my family, friends, and boss about this. They said its very odd and irregular for a flat at any price not to have a cooker/oven, but a more budget one is crazy. They said its not even that normal to buy a flat and put one yourself - but that does happen.

Anyway, I love the flat, I've paid the deposit (on false pretence, which I wasn't happy about), how might I go about asking the landlord/ agent if they could put an oven/cooker in. I know this flats been on the market for longer than all the others I've seen, so its not let as well, I reckon this has something to do with the oven. If you're going for a 400pcm, out of the way place, you're probably not going to be able to afford a whole bunch of extra expenditure, especially when all other flats you move into down the line are likely to have a cooker.

For someone who works from home, its just the perfect place. I'd really hate to lose it because of this, yet I can't afford the cost of furnishing it (thats in my budget) and providing white goods while also buying a cooker!!

It isn't unusual for a flat not to have a cooker.
I am a landlord and I do not provide any white goods as they are much more trouble to me than they are worth in respect of repairs/damage/cleaning.
I have even had to remove a cooker in the past as I find that most tenants want to get their own.
A second hand electric cooker can be purchased very cheaply or you could try freecycle.org or other such websites.

The landlord isn't obliged to provide you with a cooker. My house didn't come with one either.

I'm not sure there's anything you can do except buy your own. Maybe a cheap used one? I made do with a microwave for a long time until I could save up enough.

microwave & plug in induction hob?
  • This is pretty good info. But still odd to read.

I've lived in rented accommodation and never have I had to deal with a cooker. And everyone I've spoken to thinks this is odd, especially at the price point. And all the others (probably 10-15) properties I've viewed all have cookers. I especially hate the fact this wasn't told to me until I paid my deposit. That feels like sharp practice!

I'll take this into consideration though!

But still no advice on how to ask a landlord to put one in!

Write / phone / e-mail landlord and say " dear landlord, can you fit a cooker" to which they will reply 1) yes, no problem 2) yes, but it will cost you £x extra per month or 3) no.

You were told the flat came with no white goods.

"Would it be possible to install an oven please? Thank you."

Find out how much the landlord will be prepared to buy the previous tenants oven. You pay the difference and agree to leave the oven when you move out.
