Potential phone scam?

I'm not entirely sure if this is in the right place but it does seem to have come from somewhere competition or freebie related!
I've had a phone call from a company saying I'd entered a competition a couple of months ago to win £1000 tesco vouchers, asked if I remembered which I said I didn't she then asked me to confirm my contact details- she already had all my correct details and wished me good luck, when I asked how she had this address if I entered 2 months ago as I've moved she said it must be an error in their system, I was expecting to be asked for bank details but she instead insisted she wasn't trying to scam me when I said I'd had a few calls from companies lately and then moved onto asking if I wanted to buy a phone or broadband contract? I'd tried getting the name of the company from her but she said it so quickly that I couldn't quite hear it. I applied for freebies a week ago and only noticed after that there was an opt out on passing your details on, i usually spot them but there was a check box and a link that had to be clicked to opt out. I've had calls from genuine companies such as EDF, and a few others and none of them have asked for my details and I got rid of them by saying I was in contract, so I'm not sure if this was another company my details have been passed onto just trying to get me to buy something, she even told me calls could be recorded, but opening it with the lines about the competition seemed odd and it just doesn't seem to match up. Their number (01270 351930) does come up with a few things on google about call centres and nuisance calls and one about winning a competition so it does sound fake but I'm a bit confused by the purpose of it. So the question I suppose is have I somehow been scammed or was it just to keep me on the phone and confirm my details? (Sorry for the essay!!)

It doesn't sound to me like you have been scammed. More like a marketing call. Of course, I don't know if what they were offering is a scam or not, but it sounds like you didn't play along enough to risk anything.

Doesn't sound like you were scammed. But any time someone is asking for your information after a cold call, or asking to confirm your information you need to put your guard up, or hang up :)

I applied for freebies a week ago

That's where a lot of the spammy stuff comes from, not necessarily scams just rubbish - passing on your details/affiliate links are how freebie sites generally operate.

No scam. i don't even consider a lot of things spam. if you enter comps some marketing comes along with that especially if you don't tick no contact. The whole point of companies running comps is to get new customers and its just a form of marketing.

  • as others have said marketing, however I always ask who are calling and where from and get them to repeat until I know who it is (sometimes countless time) and never give any additional information unless u are happy to.

I am quite wary of things like this to be honest.

This morning I received a text message saying my Apple ID had been locked and to click on the link to reset it. Needless to say I just deleted it. A Google of the number it came from, said that lots of people have had the same thing.

I texted my Mom and OH to let them know, as they're the type of people who would fall for that sort of thing!
