How to calculate Pro rata salary to hours worked

What does "Pro rata to hours worked" mean? If the salary is 35,000 pa pro rata to hours worked and typical week is 25 hours, how is this calculated? Is it 35,000 divided by 12 months divided by 25 hours? Thank you .

  • Depends what full time hours are.

At it's simplest it's annual salary divided by full time hours multiplied by what you actually work.

It's not always that straightforward though

If full time hours are 37 then pro rata would be 25/37 of £35000 so would be £23,648.65.

As the OP referred to an annual salary I'm assuming they are talking about a salaried position so an hourly rate is irrelevant. (Maybe NHS or other public sector)/

I worked for over 35 years and never knew what my "hourly rate" was as I knew what the salary was. That was all I needed to know.

Of course my assumption may be mistaken - but OP referred to an annual salary.
  • For 37.5 hours per week fte:-
    £23,333.00

For 37 hours per week fte:-
    £23,648.00

For 40 hours per week fte:-
    £21,875.00

I have not seen her payslip but I have mine in the private sector for 30 years and it gives my hourly. I also know my yearly.

I did not assume anything as I did not know but was just othering suggestions. She may have over looked the obvious.

Once you know what the full time position is being paid and the hours she/he works. You have the formula to work out the pro-rata

It's unlikely the OP is asking about a job they are actually working in. It is much more likely they have seen an advertisement using the pro rata expression.

Who knows.............but what we do is you can not help unless you know the hours/salary of a full time worker. Using 37 or 37.5 hours will give a good indicator..............ohhh then again my average is 38.76!

Who knows.........we are all in the dark unless we have the hours!!

37 or 37.5 should give some guidelines. That said I work 38.76!
