Hi folks,
I just wondered if anyone could offer any advice on my situation.
I started a job 3 years ago 15 hours per week.
A year into my job and the Assistant manager on 25 hours a week left work for medical reasons for 8 weeks and then returned on 20 hours per week and I took over his role 37 hours a week and took on the extra responsibility.
This was always intended to be on a temporary basis whilst my colleague recovered and has gone on for the past 2 years.
I've now had a meeting with HR and my colleague wishes now to return to his original position and I will go back to my original hours in 6 weeks time.
I never signed a temporary contract - just a new one with the new hours when they increased.
Is this allowed after 2 years has past?

I may be wrong but it may be a case of reduced hours or redundancy. With your experience i doubt it will be too difficult finding something else though. Either way, good luck0

Your employer may claim this was a secondment coming to its conclusion and you're returning to your substantive post.GilmoreGirl1983 wrote: »This was always intended to be on a temporary basis whilst my colleague recovered and has gone on for the past 2 years.
Who intended the arrangement to be temp, you or the employer?Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
It was the employer that intended the arrangement to be temp.
I realise that I might have to find something else, its just such a shame as I love my job.
I've been really lucky that I was given the opportunity to do a course alongside my job (not through the employer, but with full support of them) and now have a few qualifications under my belt aswell.0 -
Is the old AM likely to be able to cope do you know with the added responsibility etc? If you have any inkling of doubt maybe ask them to trial it for 3 months with you at least staying on your hours but possibly giving the responsibility back.
If I were the employer I'd be happy knowing that if the old AM cannot cope that there is someone that can step right back in? Also it gives you another 3 months to look for a new job if you see the AM is fine.Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
Aren't there any other assistant manager roles anywhere else in the organisation you can apply for? HR probably thought that if you originally applied for a part time role, that's ultimately what you wanted.
If you're now saying here that you're happy with more hours and responsibility than you originally signed up for, surely tell HR that and see if there are any opportunities to keep using these extra skills you've gained over the past couple of years?!?0
