Career Development Loan - approved then declined - WHY? Already enrolled on Course

Hi everyone – I’m desperate for some signposting or advice regarding Career Development Loans (CDL)
After working very hard towards his degree my son achieved a First so decided to stay at his University and do a Masters. After signing another tenancy agreement for a year (60 miles away from the family home) and getting approval for a CDL for £7,800 (just awaiting confirmation of place from the University) he was told 2 weeks before the course started that it would not be running due to insufficient numbers.
The next 2 weeks were frantically spent trying to get into another institute running the same course, and he managed to find a place (albeit travelling by public transport 90 mins each way)
When he telephoned CDL to inform them change of institute – the application was automatically rescored and his application was declined. Can anyone tell me why? He started the course Monday and without a CDL can not afford to continue the course. His part time job does not even cover his rent
Thank you

I would imagine that there was concern about such a late change of course, and the implication of that on motivation and likelihood of completion.

If he hasn't done so, he needs to email or write to the lender setting out the full circumstances, attaching the confirmation from the original institution that they cancellrd the course, and showing that the new course is very similar to the original one. He should ask for his application to be reassessed taking into account this information.

He could also apply to a different CDL provider, but I'd definitely ask for reassessment first.

Though no-one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.

  • thanks
the chap that dealt with the telephone enquiry was surprised himself when it came up declined the second time- but unfortunately did not know why. Will pass this onto my son
  • Buy him a 400 quid crappy diesel that does 70MPG them fill it with veg oil at 50p a litre, it pays dividends over public transport.

PS you dont need to pay duty on veg oil since someone sued the government over it.

edit suprised crappy worked through the censor

    whats your son doing btw?
