Disputing Debt

Hi
Was wondering if someone could give me some advice/provide a template letter.
My partner received a letter from a law firm on behalf of a debt collection company in relation to a debt they are claiming he owes and giving 14 days to pay or threatening legal proceedings.
He has never received any previous correspondence about this and can't remember taking out the loan. He has moved house a lot in the past but has been on the electoral role for 2 years now.
Therefore if he does owe it, it was also a long time ago (my thoughts are possibly statute barred).
What is the best letter to send back to them?
Many Thanks

Hi Likestobeclear
Welcome to MSE. There is a sample letter your partner can use to ask the solicitor to prove the debt is his. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2607247
If they can prove it is an old debt of his, you could be quite right that it might be statute barred. That usually means there must have been 6 years without a payment, written acknowledgement of the debt or CCJ. Good luck and keep us posted on the response to the letter.

Send the provit, see what they come back with, keep us updated.
MMF recently been carpeted by the FCA for bad debt collection practices.
They are having to pay redress of £154.000 to nearly 500.000 customers for historic errors in due diligence and bad practices, so don't take any carp off them.
