PAYE Tax/NI Deductions

A friend of mine is working for a small company and his employer is yet to give him a payslip. His boss says the company accountant does the payroll and as they are always out and about (landscaping & gardening), a payslip is yet to materialise.

He is part of a three man team (his boss being one of them) and as he was working for a builder under CIS previously... and is registered for self assessment still... he is worried the fella isn't paying his tax and NI.

Is there a way he can check with HMRC to see if his employer is even registered for PAYE? - obviously he has a right to a payslip to show his deductions, but if he is able to check direct with the taxman in the meantime, it will save him a bit of worry while he waits for paperwork from his boss.

Has he asked them for their paye reference number? He can call HMRC and ask if his employer has notified them of him starting and began making rti returns.

His on line tax account should show his income and tax paid.

Thanks for the answers, I guess the PAYE reference is the easiest route as the fella should be able to produce this with a call to his accountant.
  • The quickest route is what molerat suggested. He could be checking the information in 5 minutes if he looked at his personal tax account.

If no information is held from this employer then he knows there might be a problem

An added bonus is that he can see what state pension he's built up so far as well.
