That wasn't what did it for him, it was his addiction to buying rubbish from shopping channels.

Being disabled he would not have been evicted for being short on the rent and the council has a discretionary fund they could have used. In short I think he's pulling the wool over your eyes.

I don't think there was any mention of the OP's friend being evicted, nor did the OP suggest at any point that he was going to provide financial support directly. So no, there is no wool being pulled over anyone's eyes from what I can see.

In which case the advice to cancel the card and freeze the interest rate is the best option. This allows the OP's friend to reduce the debt slowly. He can also advise his friend to approach the council and talk to them about being in financial difficulty and get see if the council can assist with the rent.
