Travel / Work time

OP could do either - stay away for 2-3 days or commute daily.
Both bad set up and need to be financed and compensated by the employer.
I am attending an out of hours presentation that is not mandatory but part of interest really in the evening in a hotel and that counts as my working time so will take time back for that.
Normal, healthy work arrangements.0 -
Time spent sitting on a train, is about as disruptive to one's personal life as time spent sitting alone in a hotel room in the evening.0

They did push back on flights not being apart of their policy, so I let that one slip.
that's a bit silly,
policies should be based on cost/benefit with all viable options included.
Thinks like costs, total travel time, schedule and general convenience.
Often the train/flight can be very similar in total time depending on start and end points.
sometime the extra travel by car is worth the extra convenience at site(don't need taxis).
When it comes to overnights and subsistence allowances should reflect what is achievable at the location.
something to look at bringing up after the dust has settled on this one.

Another issue you get is those setting up these visits don't like the people doing the real job talking to each other and making convenient schedules for both sides.
been told before need to be on site by 9am and it turns out the person I would be working with usually comes in at 10am and would have been happy with 11am start, once the relationship is established you can often by pass the management on future schedules.0 -
From a certain level of seniority I have always seen such requirements as part of my job - at more junior levels not so much.
I left at 7am on Wed, was at a meeting from 10am to 4pm, then travelled further North and got to the hotel at 8.30pm. Next day I wasn't back home until 10pm.
I generally only travel like this a couple of times a month so, just like working extra hours to get a job done, it's just part of it to me.
We do have a very fair expense policy though - used to work for a place where the limit for dinner was £10....0
