Introduction
Black and Black British gay men in the UK have higher rates of HIV infection than any other ethnic group, almost twice as much as White British gay men. Big Up, the Black gay men’s volunteer group at GMFA, will be carrying out research on the sexual health needs of Black gay men and creating campaigns specifically for Black gay men.
New volunteers are needed to become involved in our projects, developing culturally appropriate HIV awareness campaigns aimed at other Black gay men, including those men who have sex with men but don’t identify as gay. We usually meet twice a month and we deliver at least two projects for Black gay men each year. Big Up interventions in the past include the ‘In the Family’ booklets, which celebrate the builders of the Black gay community, and the popular Carnival parties.
Through a series of questionnaires and case studies, Big Up volunteers and other Black gay men will be able to anonymously share their experiences of sexual health services to establish the particular barriers that Black gay men face in accessing sexual health information. This data will form the basis of a report that will be circulated amongst GUM clinics and other services.
Big Up welcomes all people, irrespective of ethnicity, sexuality or HIV status, to get involved as volunteers. If you are interested in working with Big Up, or volunteering for GMFA, contact: newvol@gmfa.org.uk.
Big Up screening of The DL ChroniclesBig Up is organising a free screening of ‘The DL Chronicles’. The screening will take place at the Ritzy Cinema in Brixton on Wednesday 25th of June 2008, at 6.30pm, and will be followed by a discussion panel and drinks.
You can book tickets for the event online at www.gmfa.org.uk/screening, or by calling 020 7738 3712.
Tickets to this event are free but limited, so if you have booked a ticket but find you are unable to attend, please contact us on 020 7738 3712 so we can give the seat(s) you have booked to other people.
Big Up questionnaire
Big Up is currently gathering data into the sexual health needs of Black gay men to ensure that we produce the most relevant and appropriate sexual health campaigns for Black gay men. We have created an online survey that takes approximately ten minutes to complete.
Big Up online survey
The information in this questionnaire is anonymous and can’t be traced back to you. Your responses will help us to address some of the health inequalities that Black gay men face and create even better campaigns for Black men who have sex with men.0 -
