NEGISHI Kichitaro 根岸吉太郎 | Japan | 2009 | 114 mins
From a novel by DAZAI Osamu (1909 – 1948), this is the love story of Otani, a man who is constantly unfaithful and drinks away all his money and more, but also a novelist of talent and a strange appeal that makes him impossible to hate; and his wife Sachi, always cheerful and accommodating even as he tramples all over her.
The story is set in the period of upheaval immediately following World War II. In a time when it was difficult to be optimistic about the country’s future, its men were struggling to respond to a sudden shift in values and the crumbling of moral strictures. The women, on the other hand, were trying amidst this confusion to be strong, and to keep their eyes on the future.
Why does Sachi continue to love the prodigal Otani?

ISHII Sogo石井聰亙| Japan | 1980 | 90 mins
Originally completed by 20-year old punk musician Ishii for his university graduation, this is a film expressing the energy of the anarchic bikers, bosozoku, through a chaotic, manga-infulenced film style composed of boisterous music, hand-held cameras, rough editing and abrupt narrative transitions.
In the city of Thunder Road, the police have been pressuring the motorcycle gangs to turn peaceful. Ken, the head of the Maboroshi gang, is keen to disband and settle down with his girlfriend, Noriko – the young pretender, Jin, on the other hand has different ideas.
Crazy Thunder Road illustrates the rebellious indie spirit of the first generation of young film directors to emerge after the end of the Japanese studio system.

Yano Yumiko, with sons Atsushi and Toki, travels from her home in Tokyo carrying the ashes of her late husband to his parents’ home, a mountain village in the south of Taiwan. Having been raised in the big city, the boys are wide-eyed at the beautiful countryside… and waiting for them is a kindly Taiwanese grandfather who speaks Japanese. He helps Atsushi to locate the rail truck from an old photograph Atsushi’s father gave his son.
Rail Truck, adapted from a novel by the famed writer Akutagawa Ryunosuke, is a human drama that turns on the two universal themes of a boy taking his first steps toward adulthood, and the revitalization of a family on the verge of collapse.with ONO Machiko, HARADA Kento, OMAE Kyoichi, LIU Hong, HAN Chang

5.30 pmGOOD MORNING TO THE WORLD!! 世界グッドモーニング!!Takahashi Yuta is at high school. He is one of the quieter students in his class and his friendships are awkward. Although his mother and father are hardly around, his world is rather dull, consisting simply of travelling back and forth between home and school. One day, out of idle curiosity, he steals a bag from a man on the street, however the next day finds the same man dead. Using the contents of the bag as clues, Yuta embarks on a journey to find the dead stranger's family, a journey that also teaches him the ways of the adult world, far away from the juvenile antics of his teenage classmates.

The Chef of South Polar, as this film is also known, is based on the autobiographical essays of coast-guard chef Nishimura Jun who delivers mouth-watering and extravagant dishes for an eight-man team at the Dome Fuji Station, a Japanese research outpost in the South Pole, for a year. Think foie gras, lobster, Matsuzaka beef, ramen and onigiri… this is a delicious off-beat comedy filled with food, ice and laughter.
The film is not about what the chef can or cannot cook at -54°C. It is about the impact of his efforts on the group, on the role of food in the community and a sense of home. Isolated from their families and the world, the idiosyncrasies of each of the all-male crew intensify and threaten to de-stabilise their fragile co-existence but extremes are tempered as the men eat together, work together, and later even learn to cook together.
