    BEETHOVENS PIANO SONATAS 8

    Friday 26 Jun 2009 at 7.30pm

    Jean-Bernard Pommier piano

Jean-Bernard Pommier Born in France, began playing the piano at age 4 and gave his first public concert at the age of 7. He is enjoying an increasingly active career as a conductor working with major orchestras in Europe and America. His most recent conducting engagements include the San Francisco Symphony, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre Philarmonique de Radio France, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, RAI Turin, Tonhalle Zürich, Warsaw Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Budapest Symphony, Leipzig Radio, Belgium National Orchestra and the Salzburg Mozarteum. He also frequently takes up the dual role of pianist and conductor with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Northern Sinfonia of England, the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the English chamber Orchestra or the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

    PROGRAMME:

Sonata No. 30 in E major, Op. 109
Sonata No. 31 in A flat major, Op. 110
Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 11

In this, the final recital in this comprehensive sonata cycle, Pommier reaches the supreme lightness of Sonata No. 30 in E major and the superhuman struggles dramatised in the final Sonata No. 32, Op. 111.

    FILM of BEETHOVEN's THE NINTH

    Saturday 27 Jun 2009 at 11.30am

    Dir. Pierre Henry Salfati,

based on a book by Esteban Buch (100 mins)

Since 1824, the year of its creation, the Ninth Symphony has been the subject of paradoxical appropriations. Before becoming the European hymm it was used by Ian Smith in Rhodesia, and for Nazi and socialist propaganda. The Ninth tells a story of the successive manipulations of this protean work.

Please Note: Films are shown on Betamax video tapes therefore the quality may be less than perfect

    BEETHOVENS CELLO SONATAS

    Saturday 27 Jun 2009 at 7.30pm

    Christoph Richter cello
    Denes Varjon piano

    Programme:
12 Variations on 'Ein Madchen oder Weibchen' from Mozart's Magic Flute
    Sonata No. 3 in A, Op. 69
    Sonata No. 4 in C, Op. 102 No. 1
    Sonata No. 5 in D, Op. 102 No. 2

The radiance of the great A major Sonata Op. 69, written 'under grief and tears', is contrasted with the pungent wit and ingenuity of the Op. 102 sonatas, and the delightfully mischievous 'Magic Flute' variations.

    ======================================================================

    Ludwig String Trio
    Peter Cropper violin
    James Boyd viola
    Paul Watkins cello
    Phillippa Davies flute

    Programme:
Serenade in D, Op. 25 for flute, violin and viola
String Trio in C minor, Op. 9 No. 3
String Trio in E Flat, Op. 3

Mozart might have been the inspiration for Beethoven's ground-breaking String Trio in E flat, Op.3, but Beethoven did not seek to imitate, rather to break up his predecessor's long melodies, to deconstruct the 18th century.
