EDF's Eco 20:20 meter has locked me to EDF

Hi everyone

Does anyone else have experience of trying to leave EDF when you have one of their Eco 20:20 meters? We have tried leaving a number a times in recent years but whenever another supplier finds out the meter type, they say we cannot switch. We are effectively locked in with EDF and the only way out seems to be to change the meter. It was never disclosed that by agreeing to this meter, we would be locked to one supplier forever - this is surely an anticompetitive policy.

The majority of restricted hours metering is non transferable. You should, from September, be able to switch to any of the larger suppliers on a single rate tariff under the new rules coming into force. If you wish a multi rate tariff you will need a new meter so best to investigate who will do this for free.
  • Thanks Molerat. I've initiated a complaint with EDF and have an appointment to install a smart meter which should be transferable between suppliers (if not using all of the smart capabilities, then at least usable as a regular meter). That will let me find a more cost effective alternative. I've made sure there's no minimum period after the installation, which EDF have agreed to.

I understand why EDF would have kept quiet about the Eco2020 meter type being incompatible with anyone but EDF. It's a barrier to switching that most customers would object to if they realised that's what it was.
  • If you do not benefit from the ECO20:20 prices for example the evening and weekend, another way without having the meter exchanged is to ask EDF Energy to totalise your account so you can switch to one of their standard meter type tariffs, then if you want to switch any supplier that supports a totalised setup should be able to switch you to them.

I read a few 20 : 20 meters for EDF, they were a cracking deal to begin with but probably not now..EDF need to simply exchange the meter..You do not want to be tied down to one supplier but if you use them for dual fuel they are virtually top of the list in my area with their latest dual fuel one year fix..Would be a simple exercise to exchange, then onto a top deal with gas/electric and stay with one of the better of the UKs suppliers.
