Looking to Join my local Police Constabulary - Any advice would be appreciated!

Hello MSE,

may be a slighltly odd request here and not too sure that I may have posted in the correct area but It's the only area that seems relevant to post in.

I'm looking at Joining my local police constabulary, now im going to a seminar at the end of September about joining the Specials which is the voluntary area. I feel doing this will better my chances of applying for a full position straight off the bat.

I feel that I can pass the fitness test, so do not need to worry about that, it's just the full job I want to make sure I will be able to secure to the best of my ability!

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I think you'll find forces advise becoming a special does not necessarily put you in the frame to becoming a paid officer.

Very much depends on both your force and your ability. Whilst I never made the transition 50% of my Specials intake subsequently made the move to the regular force (and more than 50% of those did it at a time of a recruitment freeze)

Best advice I've got is join, learn, enjoy, stay safe and decide whether full time is for you.

Prepare to lose your friends. Not meaning to be nasty, it just does something to you, you change.

I'd ask the question on a Police Forum in the Specials section, you're more likely to ask someone who knows was recruitment is like in your particular area. Greater Manchester, for example, hasn't recruited for full officers for quite a while now* - so I presume they are increasing their numbers by recruiting from staff & specials.

*caveat - I last checked summer 2016, so this could have changed.

And some of the 'friends' you lose are worth losing - you'll make loads more as part of the role

Thanks for all the helpful replies, really do appreciate the feedback. I'll pop on the police forums and ask some questions there and see what the recruitment is like within my area.
