Self certifying sick?

I don't know if this is the right place to ask but can someone help me with self certifying sickness? What do I need to do, literally just phone work and say I'm not coming in? Where I work they pretty much expect you to come in unless you're in a coffin, so I'm worried about phoning in. I also don't know whether I should phone in. I'm finding it so stressful there lately and I have a two year old as well. Sorry for the waffle but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your employer will have a procedure for reporting sickness absence, this is likely to be a phone call but you'd need to check the policy to be sure.

Are you sick? If so you should call in. Is it time to look for a new job?
  • Yes I've been looking for a new job for a while but sadly nothing has come up :( The majority of jobs round here seem to be carers, teachers and hospital jobs and I'm not qualified in any of those things.

Most employers expect you to phone in as early as possible on the first day of absence, and possibly every day thereafter. The employer will also expect an explanation of the reason you aren't going in. If you're off for 7 days or fewer you will normally complete a self-certification form when you return to work.

"Self certifying" basically means that the company will take your word for it that you're sick. You'll be allowed to self-certify for a certain number of days, as set out in your company's sickness and absence policy.

If you're ill for longer than that, you'll usually need a Doctor's note, ie that your illness is certified by a medical professional rather than yourself.

Hopefuly you have sorted this but what Reading Tim says is correct - you just tellthem.

Your company may have its own policy about how this should be done - for instance, whether there is a specific person you should try to speak to.

f you are not sure, then I'd suggest that you ask to speak to your immediate boss and that you check your employee handbook / office policies when you get back so you know the routine for any future incidences of sickness. Different organisations will also have different rules about how many days you can self-cert for.

    Hope you feel better soon
