    1. Can you not prepare a detailed note about your project leaving all the info which is likely to be needed by anyone picking this up?

    2. Are you sure your manager needs you to phone in daily for the first week of your absence? That would sound odd given she already knows you will be off for more than a week. Can you not clarify this with her and say as you will be in hospital for some or all of the time it won't be possible? Do you have a HR team you could confirm procedures with?

Can you get someone else to call in for you? This should get the message across. I also don't understand why they would want you to call every day when you have an idea of how long you will be off (and it's not just several days).

No, that's worse. As an employer, getting someone else to ring in instead of the employee always made me wonder what they were hiding, unless they were in hospital or otherwise unable to call themselves.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    Hi

    1. I will try to, but I am busy because, rather stupidly, I am trying to finish as many things off before I have the op as possible. Plus sometimes topics resurface perhaps months after they went away and suddenly someone decides that they need input from our team again.

    2. That is my question. Do I have to self cert even if I have a dr's note? I am trying to confirm with HR, but they are being very, very slow to get back to me.

How long are you planning to be off?

Unbelievable question, and one which I would expect from an uncaring boss!
How the heck does someone know how how long they will be off after surgery.
Nobody "plans" to be off, but sometimes they cannot help it.

OP - please don't worry about the self cert issue, it's perfectly normal for staff to have to do that. If you're not sure what to write on it as the reason for your absence, just copy what is on your doctor's note or just put 'post operative recuperation'.

If you're not comfortable with your manager phoning you, could you maybe suggest that she emails you instead so that you can reply when you feel up to it?

Good luck with your op - and stop worrying :)

As an employer, why don't you just leave them alone to recover?

I also found the wording of that response very odd! But maybe it was just phrased badly.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I believe she is trying to tell me I have to self cert so that I will have to call in every day. Then she can say I have to talk to someone rather than leave a message and I'll spend all day every day on the phone instead of resting and recovering. I gonna be really blunt - I think she's trying to make my life difficult and I just need to know where I stand.
