Being overpaid at work

Hi

I was told yesterday that I was overpaid by £210. I am on a thirteen week probation, and worried this will go against me of gaining further employment with the company.

I told them I am gong to repay this in full tomorrow when am next in work, as they said nothing over the phone regarding instalments. I've never had this happen to me before and also few I am going to get in to a spot of bother with them.

If it was their mistake and you've agreed to pay it back I don't see the problem.

If it is their mistake and you are paying it back either in one go or in instalments then I can see no reason it reflecting on you for future employment with them. As I said if the £210 over payment is their mistake and nothing else.

People get overpaid all the time. I've never known it to cause any trouble other than having to pay it back.

If you knew then you should have said something but lots of people don't really study or even understand payslips. My mate was on emergency tax for four years without realising.

Edit: Like the other replies, that's assuming it was their mistake.

I'm assuming the mistake is down to my tax code was wrong, so told HMRC to correct it from 'BR' to 'L'.

I had no idea about the overpayment as I can't study payslips properly.

Then you've really got nothing to worry about.:)

I was destined to save up, and everything but I have got money coming out here there and everywhere.

So that idea has gone down the drain. :-(

If it's because of a change to your tax code, are you sure that you owe anyone, other than possibly HMRC, any m.oney. Normally when tax codes change any under- or over-payment is sorted out by adjustments to through the collection of income tax via payroll.

And your tax code won't have changed from BR to L. There would be a number attached to the L. Also are you paid on a Week 1/Month 1 basis?

I do, because administration at work contacted Head Office before phoning me yesterday regarding the £210.10 overpayment on yesterday's payslip.

I also witnessed HMRC changing my tax code after contacting them on their live chat, and done it for me there and then. It was changed to 1150L. This was because BR was set for this current tax year when looking on my PAYE account.

    I'm paid monthly.

BR = Basic Rate. Everything you earned should have been taxed at 20%.

1150L shows that you have the basic annual tax free allowance for the current year. This means that you should now have the tax allowance 1/3 of your tax free allowance for the year allowed for in your July pay.

What exactly is the mistake they have made? Did they pay you too much basic pay before tax and NI? What figures appear on your payslip?

Do you mean you can't access them, or you don't understand them?
