Contract terms amendment - notice period

Just a quick one hopefully. My company wants to put me on a 3 month notice period (which I don't have any objections to - I agree that I would be hard to replace). I was told when it was discussed this would also give me increased security - redundency etc.
Contract has arrived last week and it states I must give 3 months to end employment but the employer must give... (list of statutory notice periods e.g 1 week per year of employment up to 12 weeks) etc
Am I right in thinking that this is at odds to what I was told? E.g. If I were made redundent I would only receive the statutory notice period? Certainly sounds that way.

yep. You are right. Sounds totally one sided as they wont of changed notice to get rid of you at all.
You could always tell them you wont sign or negotiate a pay increase based on your new value. They could always tell you no but if you dont sign then basically they have 2 choices. Terminate your employment with the statutory notice period or change their minds on the 3 months.0 -

No it wouldn't (unless the notice they have to give you is also increased)!
If you were made redundant (or dismissed for any reason short of gross misconduct) then you would get the greater of statutory or contractual notice. Statutory notice, when the employer is giving notice, is one week for each full year of service up to 12.0 -
Exactly as I thought, have a very good relationship here so will bring it up, likely an oversight I expect. Thanks all.0

Pretty much. I assume you haven't been working there nine years?
There is no law against having unequal notice periods. The charitable interpretation is that whoever told you it would give you equal protection hadn't seen what the contract actually said and were only told that you would be put on a three month notice period; the uncharitable interpretation is that they are trying to pull a fast one.0 -
It may be worth pointing out that extra notice just gives them more time to find your replacement.
T&C that would make it harder for you to find a better job may be more effective.0
