Car Finance settled

Hi,
First time posting here and I was hoping for some advice. I once had car finance (provided by Black Horse) but the car was stolen and never recovered. There was an issue with the insurance (my partner at the time was older than me and set up the insurance policy but in doing so claimed, inadvertently, to be the legal owner of the car which I was) so the insurance company refused to pay out so I was left with HP for a car that I no longer had. I continued to pay the HP as instructed but after approximately 2 years of repayments I 'found out' during a phone conversation with someone at Black Horse that the finance had been settled by their own insurance company shortly after the car was stolen and that I didn't owe anything. When I pressed him further on this he informed me that Black Horse presumed I was repaying the HP out of the goodness of my heart. This is something that happened 15 years and I have always wondered if I would be able to claim back the money that I repaid that subsequently, I needn't have. Is this something that would be possible or, do I simply have to take it on the chin and move on? I probably repaid £3000. Many thanks for reading.

I doubt very much whether records would exist for something that happened 15 years ago.I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.0
