Not entirely to plan...
Christmas morning Mr F received a call from a family member in great distress. There have been problems in their relationship for many years and everything came to a head on Christmas Eve. We opened our doors of course. This meant a lovely but shorter Christmas lunch and an afternoon of frantic cleaning to get the Annex ready for their arrival. Not how I'd planned to spend the time but there was a joy in it knowing we were helping someone who, otherwise, would have had a very miserable Christmas. Mr F helped so we were able to get things ready in time and the hotel boxed us up a takeaway turkey dinner so there was a hot Christmas lunch waiting when relative arrived. It was lovely to have another member of the family around the table and we have been as careful as possible. I'm sure we'll need more heating oil after Christmas as we had all the windows open and it was freezing here yesterday.
We had cheese and biscuits followed by Christmas cake in the evening and opened our presents. I'd managed to find a very suitable gift in my secret stash for relative so they weren't left out. Then a film in the evening. As tradition requires we ate and drank far too much.
We're giving relative some time to regain their composure and enjoy Christmas as far as they can. Then we'll have a chat and see how we can support them going forward. It's likely they will be here until the New Year and possibly longer. Thank goodness our New Year guests cancelled their stay - everything happens for a reason.
Today we are having salads and cold meats so I'll put everything out at lunchtime and let people help themselves for the rest of the day. I can always rustle up a soup if we need more in the evening.
Despite the circumstances we have had a very jolly time.
