ID Verification

Can't believe I'm even writing this as a thread.

I am applying for a mortgage through Leeds BS, and my conveyancing solicitors are not local, nor are the estate agents. Obviously the conveyancing solicitors need an ID check.

But this is where my problems started. I went into my local branch of HSBC, who I have banked with for nearly 20 years (although my local branch has changed a few times) and they refused to do it because it's not for one of their mortgages.

So I tried Natwest, where I've had an account for 8 years, same problem. So then I tried the local branch of Leeds BS, and they refused because I don't currently have an account there.

Solicitors won't accept it unless done by them, a bank, or the estate agents.

Anyone got any thoughts, and are the banks actually allowed to point blank refuse to do it because the application isn't with them? They will happily verify ID for other purposes....just seems to me they are being ridiculous.

They should allow use of the Post Office checking service.

Check with the solicitors before you lay down your £10.50

There is nothing compelling the banks to verify your ID for any purpose. We used the Post Office to do certified copies of my husband's ID recently, as HSBC wouldn't do it for thier own conveyancers! Beware that not all PO branches offer the service - check online before making a journey.

What do you actually require done? Isn't posting the docs to the solicitor an option?

Thanks for the responses. I've emailed solicitors to check if Post Office is acceptable - if so my local branch does it so that will be straightforward.

davidmcn - I asked them this last week, they said if I post them, I have to go and collect them - because they won't return passports and driving licences by post!
