Mortgage Redemption

Hi, my partner is lending me the money to pay off my mortgage. I know that I have to get a mortgage redemption figure from Santander. Going to get this tomorrow. Do I need to get a solicitor to sort this out? I thought (perhaps stupidly) that it was a case of plaything the mortgage off and that being that. I live in Northern Ireland. Any advice appreciated.

My understanding is that only in Scotland do you need a solicitor to do the mortgage discharge, and that this doesn't apply to England, Wales or Northern Ireland, although I will be quickly corrected if I am wrong. You should be able to just obtain a redemption figure from Santander and pay it off.

Lender will handle redemption of the mortgage. Any amount you were to overpay would be refunded. Remember there's a mortgage redemption fee to be paid with the final payment.

You don't need a solicitor to do the discharge in Scotland, though for the meantime it's not as straightforward as in E&W (we are introducing electronic discharges).

And there's nothing stopping you from redeeming the account and leaving the registration of the discharge to another time.
