One thing to note, and is something I have had to take into account is that paying CT online isn't instant.
It acknowledges payment instantly, but in my experience takes 3-5 days to go from a pending transaction in my bank account, to gone. If you paid online on the 27th June, it may well be that the action was well under way and when the order was made, the money wasn't physically in the councils account by then.
As you said, you live and learn. Of course, you know how to avoid such events in future!

That was a very common problem when people only made payment on the day or the day before and the monies weren't received only a few days after the due date.
