How old is too old for a mortgage?

My husband and I have been living and working in the Channel Islands since 2000 and haven't owned a UK property at all since that time - we have been renting (if you've seen the prices of the offshore properties, you'd understand why!). I am 57 and my husband is 59. We are both in full time employment and will be working until we are at least 67 - we then have pensions etc kicking in.

My question is - can we get a mortgage on a small place in the UK, as we will get 'kicked off' the Channel Islands when we retire (our working licences to live here are related to our jobs) so we plan to return home. How long can a mortgage run until? And - strange question - are we classed as first time buyers again, as we haven't owed anything since 2000?!!
