Going through shared zone 1/2 with a 2-5 Travelcard

Hello all,

I'm trying to figure out a new route into work, but I don't understand how the stations with shared zones work. In this case the station I pass through is Notting Hill Gate and it shares zones 1 and 2 as it's on the border.

My journey (to and fro) is:

Tap in at St Helier Station (zone 4)
Thameslink to Wimbledon (zone 3)
District Line to Notting Hill Gate (shared zone 1/2)
Tap out of Notting Hill Gate

This journey charges me £2.40 and I don't quite understand why, since I have a 2-5 travelcard. Do I need to use the pink oyster card readers somewhere? The thing is, I also did a journey where I tapped in at Notting Hill Gate and tapped out at Wimbledon, and it still charged me. Again, should I have used the pink reader at Wimbledon and then tapped out at Wimbledon?

If I can get some help with this I'd appreciate it! Many thanks.

I would say this is because in order to travel between Wimbledon and Notting Hill Gate, you have to pass through Kensington High Street which is Zone 1.

You'd only get the benefit of Notting Hill Gate being dual zoned if travelling on the Central Line from the west, say from Ealing Broadway.

That is correct.

Mercenarri, perhaps try this route to avoid zone 1:

Tap in at St Helier Station (zone 4)
Thameslink to Wimbledon (zone 3)
District Line to West Brompton (zone 2)
London Overground to Shepherd Bush (zone 2)
Central Line to Notting Hill Gate (zone 2)
Tap out of Notting Hill Gate

Alternatively:
Tap in at St Helier Station (zone 4)
Thameslink to Wimbledon (zone 3)
South West Trains to Clapham Junction (zone 2)
London Overground to Shepherd Bush (zone 2)
Central Line to Notting Hill Gate (zone 2)
Tap out of Notting Hill Gate

Because the Shepherds Bush Overground station is separate from the Central Line station you will have no option but to tap out then in between the two, so the system will know that you have travelled that way - avoiding zone 1.
