O/S Daily Monday 10 July 2017

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Morning everyone

Hugs to those that want/need one x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

DH up and gone to work stupid stupid early. DS1 now getting ready for work, and DS2 still in his pit.

Cloudy overcast and dull, but it's starting like this most days, then sky clears and we got lovely sunshine, we'll see.

Yesterday meals were a bit staggered, boys had the ready meals I'd left for them at lunchtime and we got back just as they were finishing cooking, so DH and I had egg and bacon on toast. In the evening I cooked the gammon joint, and we had new potatoes, cauli in cheese sauce, mixed veg and gravy with it. Today I'm not sure what we'll be eating as have to go to DH's work and go with him to collect new sofa, old one has gone and last night was spent some of us sitting on camping chairs - but it was only for 1 night and it was a massive help from DH's mate who came and took the old sofa to the dump for us.

I had a productive shopping trip yesterday also, got everything needed, so can bin the stuff with holes. I could have spent a lot longer looking and I went in 2 shops - I wasn't impressed as I had said I'd go on my own so I could look and spend what time I wanted but DH said he'd like to go, so he took me, won't be doing that again in a hurry. I prefer shopping alone or with people who have the same idea as me.

We have had a reasonably productive weekend though, so jobs that needed to be done have been done, and once new sofa is in situ tonight after we've collected it, that's another job done.

Back to work today - if I remember correctly I'm doing a different job again today, one where I'm working alone in my own office, so don't mind that and I find it less pressurized although a lot of my colleagues hate it! The day should pass quite quickly as I'll be busy.

Keep safe and well x

Morning all and thank you for starting us off nmlc.
I'm just about to get ready and leave for work, and am glad that it seems a bit cooler. A busy few weeks ahead.
I need to get some washing on the racks before leaving, other than that, jobs are done and as my days may be longer ones this week, little more will get done before Friday.
Hope everyone has a good day

    Morning :hello:

I planted twelve strawberry runners, ten look very healthy, one has died and it's touch and go with the other one, lol. The ones I had last year looked OK but struggled after a couple of months and I lost most of them, hopefully these will do better. Does anyone have white strawberries? I have a couple of plants, the fruit looks odd – white with red seeds - but is very tasty.
The greenhouse is full of tiny green tomatoes, can't wait for them to grow and ripen.
I've just picked the first of the broad beans, 3lb 12oz, they'll go in the freezer for yummy winter stews.

I have a wisteria growing against the wall next to the back door, wildlife seem to love it. Mice climb it, though not for long because Scampi catches them – three this week! Sometimes I see a sparrow sitting in it, above the door. Scampi can't reach it so he stands up on his back legs and barks at it, lol. And a slow worm has been at the base of it for a few days, Scampi pounces but never catches it, they're surprisingly fast despite the name :D I want to catch the slow worm and put it on the veg patch but it's elusive, I'm wondering if I do manage it it'll just go back to where it wants to be anyway, lol.

The online shop is done, I have no washing to do and the floors are relatively fur-free :D I'm going out for a walk then will concentrate on work for the rest of the morning. Not sure about this afternoon, it depends on the weather. If it rains, I'll look for some Christmas crochet projects and get started on them. If not, I'll be weeding the garden.

  • Morning folks and thanks NMLC, After a glorious weekend we look to have had a light rainfall through the night and it's forecast to remain cloudy most of the day. Maybe I'll get some jobs caught up on instead of sitting out in the sunshine reading!

Yesterday when I opened the door from kitchen to garage the two windows facing me were full of flies!! Horrible sight, so they got liberally sprayed and I shut the door on them. After a while I looked out again and they had gone/died. When I looked out again they were back again! More liberal spraying done. Not seen any more since so I hope that's the end of them but I hope even more they don't come in the house! My first thought was cluster flies but isn't that more a Spring occurance? No sign of them this morning when I gingerly opened the garage door.

No leftovers to eat up today so will do a freezer rummage in a bit and see what tempts me.

CSARINA might bump into you in Ripon as we go quite a lot when we are staying at the caravan. We were there last Tuesday and I did a tour of the chazzers before breaking for lunch. As always it was busy with tourists.

Have a good day all and (HUGS) for the poorlies, sad or worried who want them. Take care all xx

    Morning all.

White Strawberries Tru? Ive heard of them but never seen one. Hubby had loads of strawberry plants when he had the greenhouse but only has one now. Long story...

This morning a mental health worker is coming to our home as a meeting has been set up for Prodigal. Not sure why it's been made here but there you go.

The men are at work and after this mental health worker has gone I can relax.

    Onwards and forwards

    Have a great day all.

    Morning everyone,

Thank you for starting us off nmlc

I can’t decide whether or not to risk going out this morning. The forecast is for thunder and heavy but isolated showers. As wherever I go it will be on foot I’m thinking that it may be more sensible to wait until tomorrow. I’ll have to have a think about it over more tea in a minute :).
I bought some new kitchen taps a couple of weeks ago and have been waiting for my brother to have the time to come and fit them for me. It was a really pleasant surprise when he phoned up yesterday evening and said that he would pop over and do it. So I now have nice looking taps that no longer drip and turn off properly, so I am very pleased to have got that job done.

As I got the housework up to date yesterday and I don’t want to do the washing/strip the bed because of the forecast and my determination not to use the dryer I think I shall spend most of the day reading, and maybe a walk this afternoon if the weather should brighten up.

Anyhow, I need some more tea and some breakfast.

I hope that you all have a good day whatever you are doing.
  • Good Morning, very warm here again today and we're likely to get heavy showers and perhaps thunderstorms through the day but that will be very welcome to the garden as it's parched and yesterday was so hot from very early on that plants were wilting everywhere.

He Who Knows has gone fishing again, taking advantage of this spell of good weather, he enjoys it so much and having seen the lake yesterday it's so beautiful I begin to understand that fishing isn't necessarily all about catching fish!!! I packed him a lunch last evening and he was gone by 6 this morning so I'm having a gentle start to the day and a 'pottering' morning. I haven't decided on food plans for the day yet but I still have some home made soup in the fridge so perhaps that will be lunch as long as it's not swealteringly hot and I may make a chilli for supper for a couple of days for an easy one dish meal.

Nothing specific planned for this week but I think He Who Knows might be going to both DDs to move a day bed that extends to a double from DD2 to DD1 to give her more room in her 'spare' room and bringing DD1s existing double bed back here to store as it's too good to get rid of. Lots of doggie walking for me and hopefully Maisie doggie for the evening tonight.

    Have a lovely day. xxx.

Good Morning chums and thanks NMLC for kickstarting the day. I still feel a bit snuffly and bunged up ,but my eye has stopped streaming at least which is a blessing :) I have book club this morning then round to sort the dogs out at DDs.

DGS Henry has his induction week at school this week for 6th form, and has to wear a proper grown-up suit and looks really smart in it, and very grown up indeed :):):) The 6th form boys all have to wear business suits for the two years they are doing their 'A' levels his next up brother Jack is just finishing his first year and says although he doesn't mind he will be glad when he goes to Uni next year (fingers crossed) and can go back to wearing jeans and a tee shirt :) The boys school are pretty strict on clothes and no matter how hot they have to wear a blazer/trousers /or suit, plus collar and tie.
Fair enough be smart, but I do feel for them when the weather is as hot as its been lately.

Had a nice BBQ at DDs last night and we sat in the garden to cool down a bit whilst eating it.

No shopping to get until the end of the week as I will go then and get all on my list, have more than enough until then in the cupboards /fridge.

Hope you all have a good week and the sun shines down on every one (but not too hot :):):))

    Take care

    Morning everyone,

High cloud this morning but still very warm, all windows and the back door open to catch what breeze there is, thundery showers have been forecasted and let's hope they do arrive as the garden could do with a good soaking.
Need to tackle Mount ironmore this morning as it's built up a bit, also have a couple of errands to do in town, bank and post office but will probably go this afternoon when it tends to be quieter.
No breakfast as am fasting today, lunch will be a feta salad with a prawn & spinach curry for tea.

TRU I have never seen a slow worm but not surprised Scampi is interested, its the swallows that drive Tilly nuts, she runs round and round the garden barking at them!

Have a good day folks x

    Hi everyone,

I'm relaxing after a very busy weekend. We went to DD's to help them sort out their cellar. The builders had just tossed lots of things down there to get them out of the way and everything was covered in dust and grit from the building work. It was a case of bringing everything up, then sort, wipe, bin or return. They got lost of really good plastic boxes to store her booze collection because the cardboard it had been in was wrecked. She could start an offie, I counted 40 bottles of champagne plus a half bottle and a magnum and she has even more whisky! That's not counting the investment bottles she brought to ours before the building work. She also gave us a box of assorted bottles for DS to start his cocktail collection, a box for DH (I don't drink) and a box for donation. She's not an alcoholic! It's work - she gets sent bottles to make cocktails to write about, new bottles to try and stuff on press trips, she also gets sent little sample bottles of spirits to try and has lots of those floating around.

Anyway after that and then tidying the house in the aftermath I feel quite jaded today so I'll be having a quiet one watching the tennis.

    Good morning one and all,

    Happy Monday.

I had a nice weekend, spent mostly with friends and Sunday night was with family.

My brother had a baby in the early hours of this morning, so I'm now an Uncle for the first time. 6lb 11oz. Everyone is well.

Meant to be playing football tonight however I may have to give it a miss to see my new niece!

Have a lovely day everyone :)
