In The Circumstances Can I hand My Notice In By Email?

So, I have worked for my company for 19 years. I was a manager responsible for 5 members of staff. About 2 years ago the company restructured and although I am a manager by name and my conditions have not changed, no one reports to me anymore. My new manager works 100 miles away and I never see him. I now want to leave the job I loved, as I now hate it. I am old school and know that I should write a proper letter of resignation, but I do not know my new manager and wonder if it is acceptable to resign by email. If this is deemed as okay, I will send an email tomorrow, but if this is not really legal I would not do it this way. Any thoughts?

What does your contract say about handing in notice. Sometimes email is acceptable, others it is not, and we can't really tell you that!

Resign by email asking if it's acceptable, and if not then follow up with a letter.

Old contract of employment. Nothing mentioned about how to resign...
  • I don't think I've done it any other way any time in the last 20 years.

Sorry to hear about your situation.

Write the letter as normal, with a signature ; then send it as a pdf / photo attachment in an e-mail ; and ask where they want the hard copy sending. That way, any paper resignation will be identical to the electronic one.

Thanks Geoff. Been brain dead for the last couple of years. Your answer is common sense. Cheers!
