I have a vague idea I heard about it years back, but did not realize it was still going.

For some reason I think you applied to the DSS for it?

In the Republic a few years back they cut the grant for Communion outfits. I never knew people got money for those.:p

The EA sends you a form which DWP stamps to state what benefit your on usually along with the free School meals form then if you are Entitled you get a payment into your account August time usually.

I never knew about a grant for communion .

It's a major expenditure in childhood down south, usually involving hundreds of euro. Relatives and neighbours are all expected to contribute, and there's often an extravagant party. Credit unions get busy at that time of year, just like Christmas, as the worse off seem to feel obliged to spend just as much ( or more) than the rich. The communion grant, probably another vote buying exercise, caused a row a few years ago when it emerged that girls were getting more than boys - after all it's vital that a fortune be spent on a dress, hairdressing and a fake tan.
Communion is a bit mad down south. Someone I worked with spent over €1000 on his daughter - they aren't even mass goers. Another one who's Church of Ireland told me his children are forever complaining that they don't get showered with gifts like their catholic friends - "it's just not fair".

Well at least if you are CoI you don't have to go to 'Confessions' and tell all your sins:T

It all went a bit mad during the Celtic tiger era, which we missed out on. You couldn't forget the stretch hummer and the bouncy castle, particularly if the neighbours had it for their daughter.

Maybe we'll have a boom period, too, following arlene's conspicuous success, or not.
