Publishing of Salary Points

Can anyone advise please?
I work in an NHS organisation and as part of a consultation on out of hours on call payments one of our senior management team has published our salary bands to the entire department. This information includes the pay scales and the names of the individuals on those scales indicating where each individual currently is.

I feel that this information is supposed to be kept confidential and am annoyed that this info has been published to the entire department without any notice or warning.

Am I right to feel aggrieved or should I just suck it up?

Thanks

Do you think this was crass stupidity or deliberate?

NHS pay scales are openly available, so no issue there. They should not have given your names, but anyone that really wanted to know how much you earned could easily work it out.

I would have a quiet word explaining your individual salaries should be confidential. I expect it was an error and they'll apologise and edit the document so it cannot be distributed further. Unless there is a history of issues like this I would not make a formal complaint/ grievance, the most you'll get from that is an apology, but with a fair bit of bad feeling going forward.

Thanks. The person who has sent the document isn't stupid, despite being a senior manager. It's been included in an illustration of how the proposed changes to the on-call payment arrangements will affect us individually and is a list of the pay scales with the names of the people on that scale listed next to it.

To my mind it should be private and confidential but it seems to have been vetted and OK'd by a senior HR person as well.

Presumably this is still AFC banding, not additional work? In which case anyone can have a good guess at your salary - e.g. Band 5 - 3 years in post.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to go with IAmWales' tip and just mention it with a suggestion that a better option might have been to list the scales and just give an indication of the number of staff on that scale rather than identifying them.

I feel that this information is supposed to be kept confidential...

You might feel that but do you have any actual evidence to support your position? Before complaining I'd suggest that you find out if there is a requirement for your organisation to keep individual salaries confidential. While I think it would be commonplace for that to be the case in practice in most UK organisations I'm doubtful if most of them have a strict rule about it.
