in Cutting tax
Hi there,
I am a teacher and work within a chain of academies. I recently moved to another school within the same academy. The move was around Easter so it took place at the end of the last financial year.
HMRC changed my tax code at this time - it had been 1150L and went to 138T X
I rang HMRC and asked why this had taken place. The person I spoke to said it was being reviewed and it would take them a full calendar year (ie until April 2018) to review my code.
She asked me some questions about my salary and then said that I should have a different tax code and has now changed it to 932T.
My concern is that I am either paying too much or too little tax. I don't want to end up discovering I should have been paying more and have a hefty bill to pay. I wasn't entirely convinced that the HMRC person I spoke to fully knew what she was talking about.
Is there anyone on here who might be able to shed some more light on this - does the information I've given above all sound correct? I'm still not clear why the tax code changed (my salary increased by around 1000 pounds, not that much)
Any help / advice would be very gratefully received

It would be unusual for an experienced teacher to be on a salary that was less than the basic personal allowance. So don't think that 932 is worrying - it is the 1150 that might have landed you with a bigger subsequent liability - and expect that 932 to fall if you're a full-time teacher.0

So in the course of a phone call it changed from taking nearly a year to being done there and then!!!
A code of 932T could be made up of literally millions of things, you should log onto your personal tax account to check what the make up of your code is. It could be your personal allowance has been reduced if HMRC think your income is going to be over £100,000 but it's more likely to be something else if you gave them a sensible estimate of your salary.
Let us know how the 932T has been calculated and we may be able to offer more help.0 -

Thanks for everyone's replies. I've logged in as suggested and what they have done is added both salaries together which makes a combined total in excess of 100K. That's surely an error, yes?
I was on the first salary for about two weeks in this financial year before that finished and I started on the second salary. HMRC have calculated my tax code based on me earning both salaries in full for the whole financial year.
I'll give them a call today to clarify this. Thanks again for everyone's help - really appreciate it0 -

Yes, as soon as I read your OP it seemed to me this was the most likely issue. If you only have one job with one salary then when you explain that to HMRC they should sort out your tax code quite quickly, in fact I'm surprised that didn't happen when you spoke to them previously. I'd be quite surprised if you don't end up back on 1150L or something very close to it.0
