Home Dear Home

Ooooohhhh, I'm so excited...the mortgage company has just confirmed to me that funds are being released & so we should be able to complete tomorrow.

I am working out our monthly budget (again) as we want to overpay. This is because on my last house, if I'd known then what I know now, I could have easily cleared it within the six years that I had it (it was a cheap house further north). I also - shame to say - wasted a lot of the profit I made from it. Fortunately, I came to my senses when I began lurking here so stopped the damage sufficiently to put down a decent deposit on this.

This thread will be our "mortgage free" diary - just us rambling to ourselves to keep up the commitment.

This is a dearer house, due to the area we're now in. The Home Dear Home title is to become a daily reminder!

I will work out a proper goal soon, but I can't quite believe it's happening!

Have now cancelled our insurance on the digital camera & also our monthly standing order to charity. Feel a bit guilty about the latter but we will be donating a lot of stuff to charity shops as we move so we're not stopping giving; just going about it differently. Mr Wing volunteers weekly for Boys Brigade & will continue to do so.

We are using the debtfree wannabe forum as inspiration so are intending to be very strict initially and will then become a little more flexible as the enthusiasm wears off.

Xmas budget this year is £15 per extended family member & they are all okay with this. Probably about £50 for Mr Wing and not sure yet about Littlewing, who also has a birthday in November. LW is aware that his bday party will be at home but haven't decided yet what it will entail.

Next year, we are aiming to have a very low budget on gifts. Mr Wing & I can be quite creative and we're aiming to create most from existing supplies, or homemade hampers etc.

We are intending to get into batch cooking as we both work from home, altho I also have a part time job. We have the potential to be very busy and the space to be a lot more organised.

Exciting times, except that the mortgage co told me early today that funds had been released but told solicitors that they hadn't & sol checked and they still haven't turned up. (Sol ask for funds to arrive the day before). Grrr.

I forgot to give another top tip. We had to send funds electronically to our solicitors for the deposit. As they banked at the same bank as us, and we did it a day early so it would show up today on their business stmt (gets updated overnight), we were able to do a free transfer and save ourselves the £30 CHAPS fee. So that's £30 overpayment available already :)

This is so cool! Fancy being up for overpayment as early as how to pay for the place! I realise you've had a house before, but still...... I'm in my 3rd property, and wouldn't have known that lot. I'm going to be looking forward to reading this, whitewing.

Karmacat, don't be too impressed. Top tips are accidental discoveries not forward planning!

Any mortgage money has turned up but now the vendor is playing silly burgers and is not ready to move until next week. I am cross, cross, cross. Mr wing is cross with me as I said, oh well, let's delay it a month and he can fix some stuff the surveyor pointed out then.

Oh dear, let's wait and see what tomorrow brings. Very grumpy now as we bent over backwards to move this on quickly.

We did it! We completed, we've got the keys and been in with friends. *Contented sigh* will worry about the mortgage tomorrow.

And the vendor left us a nice desk and lamp and some stuff. He's wonderful. Feels good to be alive. mr wing and littlewing at the chippie (unplanned spend) and I have been at the wine! housewarming present *hic*

    Challenge 1 - £640 end Oct

This is a bit of a cheating challenge really. This covers the arrangement fee and also the saving on the CHAPS payment (as shown in a previous post). It's cheating because the arrangement fee was included in my budget, but the mortgage company added it to the loan. Rather than see this as an extra bit of money available (which I would have done in the past), I am going to ensure it goes to repay the mortgage.

NB when I mention 'budget' I use the term loosely!

Constraints: I need to get details from mortgage co on how to overpay without them reducing my monthly repayment amount. They couldn't tell me apparently until completion had taken place.

    Other savings

Removal costs are fuel only as brother is lending us a van. Very kind of him.
Taking packed lunch to work today to keep costs down (mr wing wants me out of the way while he moves stuff!)
