JSA signing

I had an appointment for the initial interview on Monday but missed it due to the trains playing up.I went again today & filled out all the forms. I have to go back for the 1st signing on Monday. Is this typical. This is costing me a fortune in train fares & time that could be spent studying & seeking work. I did get a text from them a week before where they asked me to attend a centre 235 miles away & I'm still having to explain why I couldn't make it!

  • One of the things they queried on was my current date of birth! It would be nice to be able to change it & knock a few years off but it will remain as it is!

So how far away is your nearest Jobcentre for you to travel by train?
  • I have to allow one & a half hours each way depending on train times. I live half an hours walk away from the station and it's a good 20 minutes away at the other end. I will never get fat!

According to Rome2Rio the nearest would take approximately 2 hours 55 minutes to walk, still that's closer than the one they suggested 235 miles away!

Sorry to ask again but how far away is it in miles. Assume you live in a remote area. Have you asked if you can claim expenses?
  • According to the AA it's about 12 miles. I don't really live in the sticks, I am on the outskirts of a town, 30 minutes from the station on foot. I'm sure that there are others who travel further. I haven't asked about expenses. They know that I travel by train as I missed Mondays appointment when it was delayed. When I called them to explain that I couldn't get to the appointment 235 miles away they tried to send me to another centre in my county that would be fine by car but is actually 2 trains away with a wait in-between.

What you describe is normal, you have an initial meeting and then you revert to fortnightly signing (weekly in some circumstances). You can only claim fares back for appts outside the normal pattern.

Okay, thanks, fingers crossed I won't need to see them until a fortnight after Mondays appointment. Going there is certainly a good incentive to get back into work ASAP!
