Labour shortage

I work in recruitment and, to be honest, sometimes struggle to find the right person for the right job but that is all part of the 'fun'

However I have come across two stories this week that make me think that maybe the job is going to get harder

One is a well established and reputable call centre (no cold calling, no selling) that has a problem retaining staff after the six week training period. Apparently there are a lot of people that sign up for the role, take the wages while training and leave to go and work in other call centres in the city to do the same thing. The shortage of people is so bad that they are welcomed back after six months. These are not zero hour contracts by the way

The other involves a factory that would always give people a English test before signing them up (for H+S reasons). Now they are just waiving the test and signing up anyone who can legally work as they are so desperate

Has anyone else come across similar stories that shows that there is a loming Labour shortage?

Why does that specific call centre has such a staff retention problem? Are the working conditions that bad that nobody wants to work for them?

I agree, the Call Centre need to address their high turnover of staff as there must be an issue although this must be excellent for a recruitment consultant...
  • In my experience, crap companies that no one in their right mind would want to work for simply turn to recruitment agencies. That's the absolute truth of the matter.

The companies that use recruiters do so to disguise themselves and their terrible reputations.

It's most if not all call centres, bad ones have always had high turnover, now what I am seeing/hearing is the better ones have high turnovers as well. Is this due to people taking advantage of them to take the training wage and then, as they know they will easily get a job elsewhere, just leave?

There's a massive shortage of nurses in the NHS, and the problem is growing. Undervalued, (relatively) low wages, low morale, and now £40,000 of debt to qualify.

Certain areas of teaching also, although academies get around this by recruiting cheap, unqualified staff. The problem with that is not only the quality of teaching, but additional pressure on qualified staff to supervise and mentor.

My first proper job was in a call centre, within 9 months I was a supervisor earning more money and 12 months after that I was stepping up to be a manager.

Within 2 years, I could have had 2 promotions and 3 or 4 pay rises (if you include annual rises). If the call centre you talk about is similar, that says more about the applicants and them being a bit numb. If the applicants are not numb, then the call centre is probably not as good as you think?

It seems to be most if not all call centres in the local area are affected, factories to, and construction (from what I hear) has vacancies which are getting harder and harder to fill. I am just curious if anyone else is experiencing this phenomenon?
